9 month old screaming with hunger but refusing breast

The last 2 days my 9 month old has been on hunger strike. It's the middle of the night and I know he is screaming because he's hungry, he does some vague rooting around but won't latch and just screams :( he was taking milk out of a cup last night but not tonight. I just wish I could help him but he's refusing the milk. Have spent most of the day skin to skin, boobs available, a bath together but still not interested. Does anyone have any advice or reassurance that this will pass? I feel so sad for my little boy and wish I could console him :( thanks in advance

Sounds like he’s in pain and it’s worse when sucking. Check for teeth/ulcers/injuryin his mouth. Teething gel for anything obvious, calpol for pain, then offer milk in a cup or spoon.

I'd automatically assume teething or sore throat/ getting ill. Like PP I'd try teething gel and calpol then see :)

Mine did that because he was lactose intolerant. I used colief in bottled milk and the first time I used it he drank more than he had in the previous 2 days combined.

@Ohthatsabitshit @Peanut2345 thanks both of you :) he's just taken a cup of milk! He's eating lots/drinking water during the day which makes me think there's nothing painful in his mouth? He cut his first 2 teeth last week. Perhaps it's the start of him coming down with something. I've never experienced this before, it's so difficult when my usual BF soothing trick isn't working.

Are you sure it's not indigestion/ heartburn from foods in the day that he's not quite used to? Lots of new foods at 9 months.

Tbh I'd be using it as the perfect opportunity to night wean if he's refusing it anyway. Night weaned both of mine at 7 & 8 months, did wonders for everyone's sleep!
