Help! Poo goes to pooland

My 3 year old has the hang of peeing on the potty but will hold his poos in. He's clearly absolutely desperate so I don't know how he's going it. I offer a pull up as I don't mind this for now but he says no. He has always pood standing up and just can't seem to figure out how to let go sitting down. Eventually he can't hold any more and just when I turn my back to do something, he'll poo in his pants.

It's driving me to distraction and I know if he can just do it once we can build from there. That's how it was with pees. Took him ages to let go, but once he did that was it and it clicked for him.

Searching Mumsnet brings up info about a book or app called poo goes to pooland that everyone is raving about. But I can't find it.

Does anyone know if this still exists?

This is so normal. Often they can’t tell exactly when it’s coming, just that it is and then they get bored and then it just comes. It took about 3 months before my children ‘got it’ in the same way as peeing.

sometimes we just sat in the toilet with a book for a while, that helped.

I’ve just checked my app and it does say app no longer available in store. Eric website might help?

Spendingtoomuchonfood · 28/10/2024 18:44

ERIC website has loads of good advice. Try getting him to sit on potty or toilet 20 to 30 mins after every meal to see if he needs a poo.

I downloaded and printed a pdf of it about 12 years ago off one of the NHS trust websites when dd was very reluctant to do a poo on the loo. It worked!

Thank you everyone! Quick responses :)

Yes we sit on the potty a little while after meals. He's like clockwork so I know he needs- it's pretty obvious!

But he simply holds and holds. He could sit on the potty for an hour and nothing will happen. Of course I'm not letting him do that. But we try the lot. Tv, reading f books etc. It's utterly mind numbing.

We're at the stage now where he runs himself because he feels it coming. He knows he needs. Then he sits down and ... nothing. The second he's sitting down he holds it.

Omg same. Not me obviously but my 3 year old daughter.

LapinR0se · 28/10/2024 18:57

My daughter was a champion withholder and went 17 days with no poo.
We bought a pretty potty, put stickers on it (she chose), purchased pants and threw out all the nappies (she was involved in both of these) and then sat her on the potty with poo goes to pooland every evening after dinner. And she got a smartie or two for a poo.
we also had to give Movicol and glycerin suppositories as after 17 days the poo was a big hard rock.

Omg that sounds so stressful. I keep telling my son how he'll feel much better after he goes. He's even helped his daddy flush his poo away god help him!! He was saying "wow well done daddy!" 🤦🏻

He's happy with his potty. Pees no bother. He got chocolate buttons and stickers for pees but now he can do that no bother and he knows buttons are only for poos. He also knows he has a surprise waiting for him when he does his first poo in the potty (a new train for his train set)

So far none of it's helping and I keep missing him and he does a poo in his pants :( I can go hours of watching like a hawk and the second I turn away he's pooing. God help me.

He's getting his favourite porridge with a little Nutella mixed in tomorrow and it will have extra Nutella to hide the prune puree! Printing poo goes to pooland now to read with him after breakfast

How are you doing @Lookingtofind? I’m having the same issue with my daughter, she know she needs a poo and goes up and down to the potty but just won’t go. Like your son she just seems to always poo standing up and will do it when we’re not looking. Did you get there in the end and if so any advice?

Hello 👋🏻 yes Poo Goes to Pooland was a massive help. He laughed hysterically at the videos and it gave us a framework to talk about the sensation of poos coming and needing to come out. I recommend it to everyone now. As suspected as soon as he managed his first one he was absolutely fine from then on.

A combination of being firm with him that poo has to come out and then playing the Pooland video on my phone helped him to relax. I also made silly fart noises which had him laughing and helped him relax. Laughing really did help him. He's fully toilet trained no bother now and uses toilets now, no potty.

Good luck, you just have to persevere and as soon as they manage that first one they click how to do it sitting down. I imagine it's easier for kids who always squatted to poo but my son never did he was always a stander!
