2 adult teeth at 6.5 - Dentist concerned

Hi all.

We visited the dentist this morning & my DD 6.5 has been referred to the orthodontist due to only having her lower 2 adult teeth.
He didn’t take an X-ray but had a quick feel & said he couldn’t feel any adult teeth on their way for the top middle two teeth.

Does anyone have any experience of this and should I be concerned (I am now)

I personally thought 6.5 was still quite young.

Many thanks

I am surprised they have been referred without x rays as in my area they will not accept referral without.
Normal age for first adult front teeth to come through is age 6 to 8 , so unless there was a concern on x rays I would find it strange to refer . However in my area waiting lists are around 3 years long and a referral this young would be automatically rejected.
No sign of adult teeth at this age is not at all unusual.

That's weird. DS was 8 before he had any adult teeth and it wasn't ever seen as a concern. DD is nearly 7, no adult teeth, saw dentist for regular check-up last week and also no concerns.

I too thought a referral without X-rays was strange?

One minute he said she should get some more adult teeth coming through soon, she then had got out of the chair & he then said let me just feel in her mouth for any signs of them being on there way- he then said he couldn’t feel any & said he must refer us immediately!?

When my DD was aged 9 the dentist announced that he couldn't feel her adult canines at all and were possibly lost or didn't exist! No x Ray done. Fast forward 2 years and her canines have suddenly appeared!! She has overcrowding and so will need braces. She has one milk tooth left to come out.

So don't worry too much, it's still early days in terms of teeth coming through.

My son was referred at 16, when he had two baby teeth left. Xray showed one had an adult tooth waiting to emerge but the other was all alone. Decision is that the lonely one was best being left to prevent spacing out/ortho requirements. We were on a long waiting list for removal of the lazy one but it came out by itself before we seen the removals team. At 6yo, I wouldn't be overly concerned.

"Only two" at 6.5yo.......I had "only 2" until I was at least 8 or 9. I thought it was quite cool to be different. They all appeared eventually. Id be concerned if it was an almost 10yo but not at 6.

My youngest is 6.5 and only has 1 (he’s lost 2 baby teeth, so I’m sure there must be another tooth coming on the bottom, but not obviously). When he last saw the dentist 6 months ago, he hadn’t lost any. I think that’s quite odd. I wonder if there is some advantage to him sending through referrals. I assume it’s not a private orthodontist?

They do a survey of teeth lost at my kids’ school as part of their science lessons and zero to two at age six is a very common amount (I was looking at the wall display a couple of days ago).

My son has hypodontia so is missing a number of adult teeth; it was picked up when he was maybe 7? He's had multiple baby teeth removed to encourage the adult teeth that are there to move into the right space, but he'll always have some baby teeth where there is no replacement.

He's also had a retainer to move the teeth into the bigger gaps, and will likely need a proper brace in a few years once all of his adult teeth have come in (he's 12 now).

I had wondered the same, no it’s not a private orthodontist & he said the waiting list is about 7-8 months!!

I thought that was about the normal age tbh, mine started losing baby teeth at 4/5 (reception class) and our dentist said that was on the young side
