What products for toddlers curly hair

My two year old has really curly hair and I have no idea how to style it or stop it becoming frizzy if I brush. Any tips and products (shampoo, types of brushes etc) hugely appreciated as I’m clueless. Thank you

@heyaheyaa Only Curls do a range for children. It's fab. I only brush my daughter's hair when it's wet, otherwise she looks like a ridiculous fluffy cloud and it ruins the curls.

My niece has very curly hair, im not sure what products my sister uses but i know she wears a little hair bonnet to bed to help stop the frizz xx

The first thing I’d say is to ditch the brush. The only time you might want to use a brush/comb is to work conditioner through it to detangle, and possibly after washing if you want to try plaiting it. Definitely never use a bristle brush at all though. We use a denman D3.

In between washes you can use your fingers to comb it a bit and then clips/bobble to keep her hair out of her face. Or if it’s looking reasonable just don’t touch it at all!
Basically the more we fiddle with curly hair, the frizzier it becomes.

Also avoid towel drying at all with as it roughs up the hairs. We squeeze excess water out then either leave down to dry or pile up on head and fix with a thick bobble.

Re shampoo, we’ve always got on well with the child’s farm shampoo. Then any silicone-free conditioner like faith in nature brand or some of the Alberto balsam ones if it needs conditioner.

I never used any styling products on DD’s as I feel iffy about leaving chemicals on her head all day.

Don't brush curly hair unless it's wet. That just breaks the curl pattern and causes frizz

GoodVibesHere · 18/10/2024 07:47

Oh definately don't brush curly hair. Use a wide-tooth comb when hair is wet. Best to use it when the conditioner is in.

Cantu have a children range. It might be worth looking up the curly girl method and see what advice there is for young children, because traditional straight hair washing techniques can dry out curly hair. And like everyone else has said, definitely don’t brush it dry! And also worth considering things like microfibre towels and silk scrunchies and pillowcases to stop her hair tangling and breaking.

I spritz my daughter's hair with water every morning to reset the curls and get any tangles out with my fingers. I only brush with conditioner after washing once a week or two weeks. She didn't used to like it but it is now part of her routine (she's four now). We used to call it "playing hairdressers". I have kept it short with rounded layers and it's easy to look after and looks adorable with an Alice band 😊.

I really like this website to paste in ingredient lists from products for a quick check. I’m sure it’s not perfect, but I find it so much easier than scrolling through lists myself.

And only brush when wet. Never when dry

Use a Tangle Teezer brush on wet hair only. Brush from the ends in small sections.

Hi,

I also recommend just combing when wet - I like doing it when the conditioner is still in there and wash it out. I like to use jojoba oil (a few drops) after the conditioner to stop dryness and towel dry gently.

Love toddler curls!

I found CurlyEllie better than little curls/only curls, particularly the conditioner is great at detangling.

Does anyone have any product recommendations for day to day care? If my 3 year old will let me, I spritz and comb but looking for something to put in afterwards to reduce frizz.

Also, I would love any tips about what to say to a hairdresser/find a good one for curls? Never braved it but now DC3 is starting to ask to go!

There’s one near me which has excellent reviews and I’ve a a few personal recommendations. It has curl in the name of the salon, and from the treatment options it only caters for curly hair. I’d ask your local Facebook group for recommendations, especially if trying to find something in a traditional salon.
