Car seats for outgrown before aging out.

My almost 3 year old has almost out grown his car seat. He has the joie ispin up to 18kg. He's very tall and has been very comfy in the ispin as most can be a bit gappy on his waist as he's slim.

Any car seats that you've loved when your child has outgrown the car seat without aging out would be a great help. I feel some seem a bit grown up.

TIA

I had my very tall DS1 in an extended rear facing seat until 5, when he outgrew it by weight. Based on DS2's growth trajectory he'll be in it until 7, so definitely a bit child dependant! I think now you can get ones with higher weight limits so they'd last longer.

Axkid is the make we have, but I think there's quite a few brands making them now.

@Merrow thank you. We are still rear facing and the normal seatbelt ones seem too early as he's still 2. I'll have a look at that one. Thanks again.

We've an axkid minikid that's erf until 25kg and my DD aged 5 is still in it, she weighs about 21kg and is about 1m tall.

If you want to rear face I think you will need an ERF seat. We have a Besafe Stretch which we picked as it has a lot of leg room. Quite bulky though. Could fit until age 7 or at least until they are ready for a booster seat.

In what way has he outgrown the car seat?

it’s unusual for a 2 year old to have outgrown it yet

lemonsandpeaches · 17/10/2024 10:39

@TheHeadOfTheHouse he is almost 18kg. He is the height of a 4 year old.

With such a high centile child, I'd definitely look at the extended rear facing seats – they usually go up to 125 cm height and either 25kg or 36kg. We have Axkid Minikids and have been very happy with them, but there are a number of manufacturers. Axkid, Britax, Avionaut, and BeSafe all do some, and at that point it's about what suits your child, your car, and your budget.

Ideally look for one that has passed the Swedish Plus test, which is much more demanding than the UK car seat tests.

@skkyelark thank you. I'll look at the Swedish test. I'd like to keep rear facing as long as I can. I don't think I'd mind if he was 4 but as he's so young I'd feel uneasy.

We've got the britax safeway M which rear faces only up to 36kg. I love it. No isofix, it's tethered then the belt goes through the seat. Around 200 quid

@Purplerain1144 thank you.

Yes to keep RF you need the 125cm limit ones. Axkid Move, Axkid Minikid 2 and Britax Safe-way M or Britax Max Space Pro are the ones which are a good price/performance ratio.
