Baby always spitting up causing me so much anxiety

My DD is almost 4 months and she is breast fed, for some reason after every feed she is spitting up or vomiting (not sure which) and I am getting so stressed with it, not just because it gets in my hair and I hate the feeling of a wet t shirt but because I just feel like I'm doing something wrong?

When I'm out and about with her it is so embarrassing because she cries when winding as well, and when people hold her she is always vomiting on them, they laugh it off to be polite but I feel like it is just not normal and perhaps they think I'm being a bad parent??

How do I know if it's spit up or vomit? The force of it it has landed on the floor sometimes so maybe that's more indicative of vomit? Is it something to see the GP about?
It sounds silly I know but I have so much anxiety around this, because she's always spitting up/vomiting her clothes are always wet as well! She goes through at least 4 outfit changes a day.

I had this too, baby eventually grew out of it but I hated it. Go to a local feeding drop in to ask for advice, in case it's something you can fix with a different latch - but I tried everything.... It will pass!

My DD was a “sicky” baby, I barely went anywhere without a little posset of sick drying on my shoulder that I hadn’t noticed 😂

She’d always bring up some milk, sometimes more than some, but she was never distressed about it.

As long as she’s growing & it isn’t causing her distress then I wouldn’t worry, DD is now 15 so I guarantee they grow out of it!

I could have written your post!

DD is 4 months, also breast fed, and spits up after pretty much every feed. I have resigned myself to the fact that for the time being she and I will permanently have wet patches on our clothes and smell faintly of baby sick. It will pass, fingers crossed.

Is she happy after doing so? Is it a LOT like full force covering everyone, or is it more like a palm full?

When my DD was like this I got her to wear a bib to.ctach it, also I would hear a little cough noise just before and I would catch it in a muslin!

You say you're winding her. Is she a very gassy baby?

Benign reflux…
absolutely nothing benign about it from my pov.

my DS is 8m and still has it 😫however it’s radically improved

I basically wore cream tops for the first 5m on the as otherwise I was changing 4-6 x per day plus the baby

we used 2x bibs 1 big flannel one as a base and then 1x funky giraffe bibs on top

aeoliarising · 16/10/2024 15:31

It's just a bit of overflow! We all got used to having damp patches on us, and a muslin always on the shoulder. This too will pass

showmethegin · 16/10/2024 20:39

DS did this constantly until around 10 months. Was a total pain in the arse as we went through so much washing and muslins but it's reflux; common and absolutely nothing to do with your parenting. Some of them are just like that.

If it's happening in the night we found a muslin tucked tight over his sheet a godsend as when he was sick we could just quickly whip the muslin out and there would be a nice dry sheet underneath.

My EBF baby spat up quite a lot too, I didn't feel like I was always wet though and she didn't go through many outfits but she'd need to be upright for a good while after a fed or she'd spit up, if she was being held by some one else id always pass over a muslin too and lay one down under her head for nappy changes and in the bouncer or pram etc or itd go in her hair
She had eczema and a few signs of discomfort so I did trial cutting out dairy and then soya for a good long while and it reduced it slightly but not massively, so I don't think it was related really and something she grew out of by 6/7 months I'd say

My doctor refers to these babies as 'happy chuckers' 🙄 There's probably nothing really wrong and they grow out of it - eventually!

LittleOwl153 · 16/10/2024 21:23

I had a bottle fed (from 6 weeks) baby who did exactly that.. from pretty much day 1. We learnt to carry alot of spare clothes for baby and us.

Garman · 16/10/2024 21:25

I had one like that, turned out he had posterior tongue tie but was gaining weight fine so was what is termed a “happy puker”. Huge laundry issue but not a major concern! He threw up everywhere all the time for probably his first six months. Reflux issues can cause that too. Go see a gp or lactation consultant if you’re concerned or would like to see if there’s anything that could be done to help it.

xyzandabc · 16/10/2024 21:40

Is your DD happy and putting on weight? If so, then it's perfectly normal for some babies. I had 3 x happy pukers, kept thinking the next one would be better, they weren't!
Didn't matter what we tried, even hours after a feed they would still be a puke risk. No one ever wanted to hold an xyx baby unless they had spare clothes with them.

Helpful things we did.

Travel everywhere with a double duvet cover, easily washable and baby can roll/crawl about on it without puking on friends carpets.
At least half a dozen muslins in every room plus a couple in your pockets at all times.
Live in babygros until they are walking, easy to change and wash
Double bib at all times, waterproof backed bib underneath, pretty soft necked absorbent bib on top.
Fold a muslin in half and lie it under their head in the cot/pram etc so you can just wash the muslin and replace rather than having to keep changing mattress sheets
Everyone will tell you it gets better when they wean. In our case, it just turned the puke green or orange depending on what they'd been eating.

Sunlight gets out almost all food/puke (and poo) stains, except banana. Bananas stains go black and nothing gets them out.
Ours got better between 10 and 12 months.
They are teenagers now and none the worse for wear despite the baby puking. I'm always happy to hold a pukey baby as I remember it well no-one wanting to hold ours!
