Nasal flu spray for my 3 year old?

My 3 year old came home with a letter to say he’s being offered the nasal flu spray. I’ve read it’s live? What’s everyone’s experiences with it?

Why the injection? I thought children get the spray?

Injection is offered as an alternative- the nasal spray has a product derived from pork gelatine in it. It’s also not suitable for some health conditions. The injection not suitable for egg allergy people.

I live near-ish to Leicester and a lot of children have the injection because of the pork issue with their religious beliefs. Not sure what the vegans do mind…..

We get a very clear letter explaining which method is suitable for whom, because they are trying to encourage uptake.

My DDs have it every year, they are 13 & 9, never had any side effects

All good, no reaction - had it for three years.

We did have to avoid my dad for a week or so the year he was having chemo.

Typically children get the nasal spray however it contains gelatine so parents can request the injection instead. Both of my toddlers are disabled and there’s no way you can get anything up their nose so the injection is the best alternative for them

My 3 year old had one 3 weeks ago. He did have a bit of a nosebleed but was fine afterwards.
The year before that, no after effects at all
Flu can be really serious and I will always get any vaccinations for hum.

Thanks all. He’s booked for the 29th

just the mmr now. Should have had it 3 months ago rang the docs so many times and still nothing!

Thanks for coming back. That does seem like a really sensible decision. Keep on with trying to schedule the MMR, that is more urgent. I'm not sure if the two vaccines need a gap between them, as both are live, but prioritise the MMR if necessary.

My kids have had it every year with no issues.

Flu is awful. Really awful. You don't want your child to catch it.

DD was not bothered at 2yo but was more aware at 3yo and did get upset having it. Soon calmed down though and no adverse effects. I will always have DD and DS have the vaccination despite how unpleasant it might be because I'd prefer that to then getting the flu
