When did your baby start sleeping longer stretches?

I know! It's normal for babies to wake for feeds at night before anyone says anything but I'd just like to know when your babies started sleeping longer stretches ..

My DD is 5.5 months old and wakes every 3 hrs for a feed..so she sleeps at 8.30pm and will wake 4 times during the night.

Sleep trained some time after the age of one. Before that was too young. Night weaned once well established on solids and able to have a bowl of porridge with a banana mashed in before bed. Gentle sleep training plus no milk at night led to sleeping through.

My three year old occasionally does five hours but is usually up after about three and only settles for the rest of the night beside me (which I enjoy now I have a super king). My younger one will tend to do four then two two then up unless in a leap or teething then it's every hour again. I think most babies (under two) I know tend to be up a couple of times a night with the first stretch usually longest. There is research from Kathryn Stagg and Lucy Webber if you Google it.

Two years old.

It's one of those 'how long is a piece of string' questions, they are all different.

Sleep trained my eldest at 6mo and youngest at 8mo. We did CIO.

My little one was like yours at that age. Then around 9/10 months it dropped to one wake a night, that was after putting him in a single bed. Then at 15 months he magically started sleeping through 6-6. I know it feels endless but they do get there eventually

SweetLimeSoda · 14/10/2024 06:45

When she moved into her own room at 4.5 months. Then longer again once we started weaning at six months. Night weaning started at seven months, and by eight months she was sleeping 12 hours. The book'The No Cry Sleep Solution' helped, although we didn't follow it religiously.

19months
then a few weeks later that stopped
and a few weeks after (22m) started again lol

My first - didn't until we did gentle sleep training. He wanted feeding for comfort.

My second is 5 months and tends to go to sleep around 8-9ish and then wakes once usually around 3ish for a feed and again then early morning around 5/6ish. Sometimes goes back down till 8ish other times is awake for an hour or so.

Honestly every baby is different. Having said that I have made a conscious effort with my 2nd to put her down awake so she falls asleep in her cot and I think that makes the difference. She is more able to self sooth (trying to suck her thumb but even rubbing her hand against her mouth seems to sooth her).

Does baby have a dummy? My first was breastfeed and therefore until we introduced a dummy we realised he wasn't waking for hunger but rather wanting comfort. Once dummy was introduced we had a painful period of being woken to pop dummy back in, but once he could find his own dummy we just chucked about 5 in his cot and he was better at sleeping.

When I stopped breastfeeding at night - when they were both about 13 months.

If I hadn’t actively weaned them off it they’d probably still be waking up wanting milk
now at 6 and 3 🤣

IsitanIssue · 14/10/2024 11:22

Our first two were up and down for the first year - then solid sleepers shortly after 12 months. Multiple wake ups a night.

Our third from 5.5-6 months sleeps through to 7:30/8:30am most nights. Prior to that they (and still on the odd night) only woke up once a night for a feed anywhere from 3-5 hours after being put down. I do think we’re a lot more laid back now in that if she stirs we give it 5 minutes to see if she’s just finished a sleep cycle. You’d be surprised how often they’re just having a little wriggle and happy to fall back asleep themselves. With the first two we were up like a shot the second they made a peep.

11 weeks slept through the night. All babies are different

teatoast8 · 14/10/2024 11:24

He's breastfed

teatoast8 · 14/10/2024 11:24

Also went in his own room.

RevelryMum · 14/10/2024 11:27

Mine is 17 weeks I give her a dream feed around 10.30 and she will wake again then about 1.30 for a bottle and maybe again then at 5 ish. She doesn't feed to sleep though has never really relied on feeds to sleeps so that's a big help sleep wise she's awful sleeper during the day. Thank god ok at night

Yep she's had a dummy since she was as 3 weeks old as I was breastfeeding at the time and she wanted to be on me 24/7!
In the night she needs the dummy to go sleep but it will eventually drop out. When she's trying to go sleep the dummy is constantly dropping out and I'm having to constantly put it back in!

Mine is the same she never feeds to sleep. Day time naps are only contact naps, as soon as I put her down she'll be awake and crying!

@YouFoundMe I've worked really hard over the last few weeks to get her out of contact naps and needed to be walked rocked to sleep I started by sitting down with her and rocking her very gently in my arms if she started back arching crying giving out I stopped rocking once she stopped I would start rocking again worked really well only took a day or two . I then moved into a sleep training course I'm in the middle of it , it's very very gentle she is asleep right now beside me on my bed the next step is to move into cot settling. I have noticed her night time sleep is improving as I'm working on her naps .
