At what point is it best to change the nappy?

Should we…

  1. wake baby from sleep to change him
  2. do it once he’s woken up - problem is that he immediately starts crying to be fed so he will go through the change very distressed
  3. do it immediately after the feed has ended - problem is that he hasn’t been winded so will sick up milk during the change as well as be distressed during the change as he is uncomfortable
  4. do it after winding - problem here is that he will be sleepy and so disgruntled to be changed. Also, you go into the change with a strong likelihood that he is going to do the poo while you are changing.

It seems there is no perfect time?! Baby is four weeks old.

Feed, wind, change would be my plan. As baby grows up, change them after a meal, after a nap and when they have done a poo.

Thank you ☺️

I’d change a poo immediately but probably wait until after feeding and weeding to change a wee nappy.

I wouldn’t ever wake a baby to change a nappy.

It’s so hard because most times he falls asleep while feeding. So I put him on my chest (so burps can escape naturally) and he’ll stay there for a couple of hours. I’m loathe to wake him to change him. But once he wakes up he wants feeding immediately and cries heartily if it doesn’t happen. It feels like there is no window to change the poo-ey nappy!

Modern nappies are basically always dry so don't need worry about changing them straight away. So, as pp's, feed, wind, change, cuddle, sleep 😊

KnittedCardi · 12/10/2024 16:25

Oh, and yes, never wake a baby to change a nappy. Let sleeping babies lie!

CheeseWisely · 12/10/2024 16:25

I started doing feed then change but switched to change then feed (suffering the crying during the change) because putting a sleepy milk drunk baby back down is so much easier without stripping them half naked first.

mindutopia · 12/10/2024 16:35

Before feeding/after nap or whenever there is a poo. It wakes them up properly so they are ready to feed and means they are clean for next nap ideally.

Maybe feed half (one side or half bottle) wind, change, then continue feed and put down sleepy baby.

mynameiscalypso · 12/10/2024 16:38

I did it before feeding. I liked the sleepy milky cuddles too much to want to interrupt them.

Change straight away is soiled, and if full. Otherwise just when baby seems relaxed.

TwigTheWonderKid · 12/10/2024 16:44

Oh my goodness, never wake a sleeping baby!

oustedbymymate · 12/10/2024 16:44

I used to change feed wind. As he fell asleep feeding often but would puke it all back again if laid down within 20 mins

I went for changing before feeding at that age, especially during the night as I’d want them to be sleepy and easy to put down after the feed.

Yes us too generally. They did tend to screech through the change but I figured it was better that way around.

Any poo was changed immediately though of course whenever it happened (well, within a few minutes, say if they were actually in the middle of a feed).

Overnight we wouldn't change them at all unless it was a poo. Although nobody told us that until about two weeks in with DC1 so until then we had done!

Sometimes as PP said if breastfeeding and if it had been a long time since they'd have a feed I'd feed one side for a bit then change in the middle then offer other side.
