What Pillow for 3 year old? Why doesn’t my DS sleep through the night?

What does everyone’s 3 year old sleep on? What type of pillow? Ds is such an active sleeper. I thought we had gotten better with sleeping but since starting school in September he’s waking so regularly through the night. I just don’t know why! I don’t know if he’s cold, uncomfortable I just don’t know!

3 was a crazy age for DD here! Often found her upside down at the far end of the bed. An IKEA bed guard helped after she fell out a few times. Normal kids pillow…paw patrol the best! Warm pjs helped in winter as duvet never stayed on. First couple months at school also upset sleep.

Didnt sleep through at all that year but not up for long. Now 4.5 years and much better! Generally stays in the same place and doesn’t wake that often touch wood!

My 3yo just has a normal pillow

As for why your son won't sleep through the night, you tell me why mine won't and I'll tell you yours 😂

Agonised about this with my 3 year old incase an adults pillow would be dangerous 😬 He sleeps with an adult pillow that's quite thick and squashy but it's the only thing that really helps him as he has night time asthma and post nasal drip so coughs a lot. He sleeps really well, sleeps through the night, but would struggle without the big squashy pillow

@andthenigetchocolate sorry to ask but how old was he when you first gave him the pillow because my 2 year old seems like he'd benefit from a normal pillow but obviously I'm scared incase something happens 😬

Only in the past few weeks. He's just turned 3. I don't know what else to do because if I raise the mattress he just moves to the other end in his sleep, but with the big pillow he stays put and it massively helps the night time cough.

He sleeps 12 hours straight every night (he always has slept like this when he's well, but when he's been sick and is going through a period of coughing it's horrendous)

Mines only just turned 2 so probably going to have to wait aren't I😔

@Devilsmommy

I don't see the harm in an adult pillow that's just normal. The one that seems to work best for my son is like a big marshmallow which is why I'm a bit torn with it. He seems fine sleeping with it though.

well he still has toddler pillows at home and are saying they uncomfortable but has a bigger one at our caravan. He doesn’t sleep any to be honest. He woke up with a stiff neck a couple of weeks ago. Still don’t think it’s 100% so that has made me more uncertain of which pillow is best? I’ve seen some toddler memory foam? But £35 each.

as for the sleeping. Thanks all it’s always good to know you’re not alone, because it’s been worrying me slightly he’s always been so good with sleeping alone I feel like he’s going backwards. Me and DP are starting to climb into his bed with him just to get some sleep 🙈 it’s so hard to know what to do for the best!

Honestly this is so normal

Remember sleep isn't linear, just because they sleep through when they're younger doesn't mean they won't have periods where they need more support.

Also, talking to other mums, I know I'm not the only one getting into bed with my 3yo. If it's not mum, it's dad doing it. As long as everyone is getting some sleep, we will get there in the end

Fightingtobepositive · 11/10/2024 20:56

@RedRobyn2021 yes exactly this. This is how I feel. We all just need to sleep! Thanks for sharing. It’s just so bizarre. But he has been saying a few things today that’s made me think he just needs that comfort. He said he’s having dreams that he’s alone and we don’t come when he calls 🥺 obviously this is just a dream because we are there at so much of a mutter. I hope it’s just a normal thing. He has other weird little habits at the minute too. Since he’s happier in school he literally carry’s a leaf around for the entire day. He said he won’t have a wee because he doesn’t want to lose his leaf 🙈

I actually miss waking up to a giggling 3 year old now that bed sharing is a thing of the past!

At the time it was hard work though! Good earplugs were my saviour!

Singleandproud · 11/10/2024 21:25

Why not try a pregnancy pillow, not for his head but more waist down, to take up some of the excess room in the bed and for him to cuddle up to like an extra person? It would keep him in one place too and he'd be sorting of nested so would stay cosier.

Fightingtobepositive · 12/10/2024 09:43

@BenHolland it’s is lovely waking up next to him and also giving him a cuddle of support through the night. But I’m aware this become a regular thing if it continues which we’ve worked so hard not to do. But their little happy face in the morning when the wake next to you is 🥰

@Singleandproud this is actually a really good idea, I’ve tried a normal one but he just moves that. So I actually like this idea x

My DD gets in our bed every night, varying times, but she always giggles and says "mummy I love you"
