2 years old - sudden fear of everything

DS turned 2 in early July. In the past month or so he has become afraid of everything. Going into nursery he is now so clingy and he used to be fine. Used to be the noisy fearless kid and now he hates loud noises, other kids being noisy or shouting, getting involved in play groups and hates other kids using toys, hates any sirens or revving engines, the doorbell/knocking on door, cars beeping/honking, just instantly runs to me crying. He’s an active little boy with a really good vocabulary but none of my friends kids are like this and are all happily running round without a worry. He used to love soft play but now all the other noisy kids or whooshing noises and noise toys means he hates it and wants to leave.
When it happens I comfort him and tell him nothing will hurt him but not sure what else to do! Will this go away?
I can deal with the fussy eating and tantrums and toddler stuff but this feels like a total personality change from my normally fearless confident boy.

It seems to be quite noise based. Has he had an ear infection or anything like that? I'd take him to the doctor to see if there is any physical reason why noise is troubling him like this. There is a condition called Hyperacusis (I think?!) where everyday sounds become unbearably loud.

I'm probably jumping to conclusions but he isn't being shouted at in nursery by staff or anyone is he ? It almost sounds like trauma ? I could be completely off the mark though.

Since September there are new kids at nursery and there has been a lot of crying a drop off and while they settle. This unsettled my DD a bit. Could be a factor.
