Potty training tips please?

DS is 2y9mo. Very stubborn. Bit behind on speech but getting there now.

we’ve been educating him on the potty and saying nappies will go soon etc. having practice with no nappy on

He wil ask for a nappy if he needs to go for a wee or pop. So does know and when he does a wee he says he’s done one

so we think it’s time to grin and bear it and tackle a tough potty training few days

Any tips ? Got plenty of chocolate buttons and raisins. lol heard bribery is #1 tip but any others are welcome

I potty trained my DS this summer when he was 3.5 yo. He is speech delayed and also very stubborn. I tried twice before this summer when he was 2.5 and 3 - these were unfortunately a no go but I feel they helped lay the foundation for what he had to do. It only took him a week to be completely dry in the day with no accidents and he went dry overnight pretty much straight away so now the pull ups are 100% gone.

It's fab that he can tell you he's gone and signals that he wants his nappy when he needs to go. I'd say if he doesn't show willing though don't stress over it. Just keep educating, reading books, watching videos/ TV programmes based around using the potty (loads on YouTube), keep having nappy free time, keep the potty out and in his sight throughout the day. I found the ERIC.org.uk website really useful for tips and help.

If your little one is motivated by bribery that's also good and will help! My DS wasn't at all but I bought a baby shark (his fave) potty training sticker chart and it worked like a dream. I also bought him pants with prints on that I knew he would love (sharks and dinosaurs) so it was exciting for him to wear these everyday.

I'd say in hind sight and from trying 3 times, if it's really hard and he's really not playing ball, it's probably not the right time. If he seems to mostly be getting it, expect a few accidents but don't make a thing of them, just say things like 'oh no, there's a wee wee on the floor. Don't worry, we can try again next time' and clean it up.

Good luck! 😊
