Any magic tricks for toddler coughing at night

My 2.5 year old has a horrible cough, any experienced parents got any tried and tested tricks to ease her cough at night?

Ive tried the ever popular Vicks on the feet covered by socks - did nothing at all.

I’ve also considered a humidifier but they aren’t cheap and I’m not sure what effect it would have because according to our room thermometer, it’s already really humid in the room as it’s been so damp and rainy lately. Don’t want to waste money to add humidity to an already humid room?

I was going to say vicks on the feet, but also on chest and back of the neck.

Bronchostop junior helps a little bit for us. And Calpol.

Tilting the bed up slightly so head is higher than heart.

I bought a mini humidifier but never noticed it helping.

Humidifier really helped mine when thru had bad coughs (hasn’t happened for ages thank god). Mine was about £20 from Amazon.

Obviously, putting vicks on her feet isn't going to stop her coughing! Try putting it on her chest so she's breathing it in.

Cough medicine.

Prop her head up with extra pillows/prop the head of the bed up.

Try the old remedy of hit lemon and honey. Works in our house.

Squeeze a lemon into a cup, add boiling water and a teaspoon on honey - proper natural stuff ideally - sugar does work as a substitue but its not as good. (Obviously cool it as she's little!) Drink before bed.

DS had a cough for ages he couldn't shift which was awful at night. Found a pillow/spare blanket under the mattress to tilt it up and getting ds to sleep on his belly worked the best.

Too much humidity can be as much as a problem as too little for breathing issues. If a cough has lasted more than a couple of days at that age and it's keeping them up I would want chest checked. If chest is clear then as per others advice. If you do have money, I would consider an air purifier and potentially a dehumidifier. If you're in UK not many people will need a humidifier...

My granny alway put our pillow into the body of a pure wool jumper and make us lay on our side. She said the vapour from our breath collected on the fibres of the jumper, then in turn it made the air more moist as we breathed in so it stopped the tickle at the back of our throats. It always used to work for us kids, but was it just a placebo?

Have they been tested for night time asthma. ?

Vicks on back and chest
Olbas oil in a diffuser (make sure you're putting enough drops in to actually be helpful)
Two pillows or a thicker pillow
Steamy bath/shower and sterimar saline spray before bed

If recurring, talk to GP about asthma or cough-variant asthma as they may need a reliever and/or steroid inhaler.

Yes it’s also been on her chest.
its a method with no scientific backing I know, but since so many people swear by it, I gave it a go.

It does work though! I have no idea why, but Vicks on the soles of the feet always stop mine coughing themselves awake.

No, she’s had a cold, she’s usually pretty healthy, this isn’t a long term issue just an illness.
