What's the difference between sudocream and metanium?

To cut a long story short DD2 has been on Anti Biotics and as a result making her poo lots and it's given her horrible, horrible (i.e bleeding, red sore bum) nappy rash. Dr prescribes metanium, but what's wrong with sudocream? Aren't all nappy rash creams the same? What's the fastest way to get rid of it? (can't bear to see DD2 in distress anymore)..

sorry should add, have always been a sudocream fan, but not really working much this time

sudocrem no good for major nappy rash - metanium is fab and reaches the bums other nappy creams don't reach, so to speak.

PussinJimmyChoos · 22/04/2008 22:15

Sudocrem is ok for everyday use, but metanium is a lot stronger and for more serious nappy rashes.

Whenever DS has a shocking rash, I always switch to metanium for a day (I use Sudocrem normally) and it clears it up a treat!! Be sparing with it though - you don't need a lot and it stains the nappy yellow so don't be shocked if you see that!

metanium is amazing

don't know how it works, but it does

also, make sure you use warm water and cottonwool and dry bum with clean towel thoroughly afterwards

NorthernLurker · 22/04/2008 22:15

sudocrem is good for prevention but not much cop for cure. I've heard v good things about Metanium and i tend to use Bepanthan (they have it in Boots) There is also a caomomile one called Kamillosan which is good too. Lots of nappy off time and you could consider painting the errors with egg white - that also works well apparently.

kittywise · 22/04/2008 22:17

metanium WORKS !!!!!

Bramshott · 22/04/2008 22:17

Weleda Calendula Nappy Cream is better than both of them!

Monkeybird · 22/04/2008 22:18

sudocrem is only a barrier cream/moisturiser, metanium helps to heal the skin.

Fastest way to get rid of it is to keep it dry and clean at all times with a tiny smear of metanium. ideally have her in no nappy if you can, but not always practical.

If that doesn't work you might need a steroid cream.

If that doesn't work I have one more suggestion but this is real BIG GUNS and we only used it in desperation when DS2 had open sores for weeks. Let me know if and when you need the big guns - you probably won't.

kittywise · 22/04/2008 22:19

For bleeding bottoms what I do is put a thin layer of metanium followed by a thick slaver of petroleum jelly which acts as a barrier. The tow together really help. I've recently had two babies which teething acid poos and raw bottoms, not nice, you have my sympathies

BigBadMouse · 22/04/2008 22:22

Metanium is far far better than Sudocrem - all nappy rash creams are not the same IME.

Metanium works very quickly IME just make sure you follow the directions - you are only supposed to put a thin layer on (so you can see the skin underneath).
I would just stick to using the metanium and avoid combining it with any other treatments. Def avoid wipes though!

NorthernLurker · 22/04/2008 22:22

Can anybody tell me why teething takes the skin off a baby's bottom like you would not believe? Poor little mites!

kittywise · 22/04/2008 22:24

I don't know northern, but it does and it's horrible

smiler5 · 22/04/2008 22:25

Metanium absolutely fab stuff. Am a nurse and use it on adults too! Sudocrem just protects, doesn't cure.

eekamoose · 22/04/2008 22:25

Metanium really does the job. But you only need a little bit.

I never used any kind of nappy cream with mine until they got a rash. So no experience of Sudocream, which I understand is supposed to be used as a day to day sort of thing?

Its horrible when your LO suddenly has a red raw bum isn't it? Poor little DD.

PussinJimmyChoos · 22/04/2008 22:28

N.lurker - maybe its just nature's way of producing a visual sign for us parents that they are teething??? Its weird the varied symptoms that teething can produce though!!

tiredandgrumpy · 22/04/2008 22:33

My doctor introduced Metanium to me as "Magic yellow bum cream". Says it all.

hotchocscot · 22/04/2008 22:34

yep agree with above, was put onto metanium by mum chum when ds had first teething bottom breakout and it really does help to heal the skin quickly. Sudocrem made no difference at all when it was acidy poos stripping the skin. Hope your little one's bum is better soon!

AnnaDS · 22/04/2008 22:35

Sudocrem contains lanolin, which some children with sensitive skin/eczema can react against. It's also fragranced. Metanium doesn't have lanolin or fragrance in it.

TBH, I find neither works when my DS has nappy rash of the bleeding, broken skin kind (too much fruit or teething). The only thing that does work every time is Timodine, which you get on prescription. My DS knows it as 'the magic cream'!

Lucyand2 · 23/04/2008 11:32

I've found that combining them both works, just rub them together on the lid and pop it on.
Another good thing for very bad nappy rash that's weeping is Drapolene.
Also - sprinkling cornflour on the area before popping sudocreme on it has worked for me in the past when the rash was very bad.

Seona1973 · 23/04/2008 12:28

I found neither metanium or sudocrem work on their own for bad nappy rash but a thin layer of metanium with sudocrem on the top works wonders

Amani · 23/04/2008 16:11

Thanks guys - going to keep up with metanium and the other advise suggested. useful to know that nappy rash = teething, thought I was being a bad mum and not changing nappy enough hence nappy rash

Bepanthen rocks in this house.

As I understand it, teething babies produce lots of dribble. All this saliva changes the pH of the gut, so they get lots of horrible green poo. The green colour is bile, i.e. digestive enzymes normally required for digesting food. But when bile comes out in poo, it digests bottoms instead.

Poor little mites. As if having a sore face wasn't enough to deal with!
