Giving up the dummy

My 14 month old only has his dummy at bed times. We did manage 3 days without his dummy and with very little fuss. After the three days he had another tooth coming through and would not settle for any of his naps for a few days. So I gave in and gave him the dummy back to sooth him.it's now the first thing he reaches for when going to bed. He has now transitioned to one nap a day which is working well. Health visitor says he should be off the dummy by 18 months old as it affects speech. Any advice for giving up the dummy for good?

It’s not going to affect his speech if he’s only got it at bedtime, because he’s not speaking at bedtime.
My DD had a dummy at bedtime until she was 3yo, took them away on her third birthday. It’s not a hill I’d die on at 14mo, wait till he’s old enough to talk to about it.

My girls were 2 and 3 when we got rid of theirs. They were obsessed with it, I thought it would be really hard.

We put the dummy in a little bag and left it on the doorstep for the dummy fairies. 5 minutes later we opened the door and there was a little present for them both. Just a little soft toy and a small chocolate bar. They were so excited about it and never mentioned the dummies after that.

We spoke about leaving them for a few days before we did it so they were prepared.
I'd wait till he's a little older so he understands. The dummy never affected their speech or teeth so I wouldn't worry about that too much.

I agree with this. My DD is 27 months and still loves hers. I’m waiting until she has her final teeth before trying to take it away as it has provided a lot of comfort through teething and all the nursery illnesses.
