Has anyone else got a child 3 years or older in terry nappies? my dd was in terries until she was 2, then i put her in disp pullups, i recently decided to put her back in terries because i have loads of them. i just wondered if anyone else has an older child in terries and how your dc copes in terries.

My DS1 was in Terries in the day when we went out until he was 3.5 and on long journeys when he would fall asleep in the car until he was nearly 4. At home we used waterproof trainer pants until he was 3.9. He still has a 78cm Terry at night, like his 4 year old sister, though he will be 5.6 next week. We had no problems using Terries but we had always used them. I do know that on odd occasions when we have been away and have used disposables he has complained that they are uncomfy and all the plastic near his skin makes him sticky; he has also had more wet bedding with them too than when using Terries. I dont know if that helps cos I am not quite sure what your precise problem is?

Hi,the problem is she has never liked having her nappy changed, she wriggles alot which makes it difficult to fasten the nappy nippa. I have started using nappy pins again.
Do you use pins or nippas? Her older sister is 6 and she still has a Terry on at night, I didn't have any problems with her wriggling or kicking, she just lays still until I have finished. What age will you bring him out of nappies?

In terries to 5.5yo (dd finally got dry at night then) & ds still ongoing (4yo).
We had rash problems so use disps every other night.
I have always used pins. What fold ~& wraps do u use? I have a Rebus XXL wrap for ds, but petite dd was ok in ME L wraps to the end.

Hi Sophiesmiles
Ive always used pins, I am not very good with gadgets of any sort tho DH loves them! I shall go on using nappies until he is dry or he insists he does not want to wear them or perhaps we try an alarm when the Dr say it is time to take it a bit more seriously at 7+. So far DS1 has just accepted that he will be more comfortable in a nappy than waking in a cold wet bed. DD1 just follows suit. It is also a lot easier for me I must confess, especially with three others in nappies at least part time. Since MIL let slip that Daddy was often wet at night till he was 9 we can, even if we had wanted, make no secret of the fact that Daddy used to have accidents at night and stopped and I think perhaps that helps him feel there is nothing either shameful or that he can do to help it, unlike daytime accidents, which I would find more difficult at his age, I think. I was begining to wonder if there was something wrong with him or me when he was quite late in the day, but then it just happened. We have told him that there is a special change that takes place in children?s bodies sometimes when they are small and sometimes when they are bigger and, just like Daddy, it is going to happen to him when he is a bit bigger.
DS2 wriggles a lot too. I give him a book to look at or a toy when I am changng him and that does help.

lljkk, we just use old fashioned plastic pants. I have never found a modern wrap which really keeps the bed or trouser legs dry, though they are OK for the girls when they wear a dress or skirt!

How does anyone manage to get a terry on at 4yrs + ? I struggle at 3 yrs !

CatWithKittens · 30/04/2008 10:32

It depends on size of child, fold and, in the last resort, size of terry! I use different folds depending on sex and age of dc and have just made a new one up for DS1. I have just started putting DD1, who was 4 last month, into a 78cm one at night instead of two 60cm ones but not so much because they were too small for her, more because the biger ones seem to be thicker and more absorbent. However with DS1, as I only discovered the larger nappies when he was 4.6, he had two 60cm ones till then and they fitted without any difficulty but the 78cm one was better because there was more absorbency at the sides. (In fact I have a friend who still uses two 60cm terries on her 9 year old DS who is a normal size for his age; she refuses to buy bigger ones, believing that it cannot be much longer before he becomes dry.) I think perhaps a lot of children do not get much bigger round the waist and hips very quickly as they get older - they seem to lose puppy fat and shoot up in length rather than in the body if my DS1 and DD1 are anything to go by!

my DS is just 3, he's been dry at nite for about 9 months, the problem is during the day, he keeps sneeking off and poohing in his pants, i have threatened to put him back in nappies, not sure if that is the right approach but i am at the end of my tether with it! Any suggestions

sophiesmiles · 02/05/2008 06:21

Hi CatWithKittens, I don't suppose I could have your friends email address, she has obviously got alot of experience having a 9 year old still in terries, I would love to chat with her. Sophie.

Sorry, she is a technophobe and does not use a computer at all! I rather envy her the amount of time that must give her to do useful things. If there is anything specific you want to ask I can pass it on to her and her reply. Similarly my MIL who was a paediatric nursing sister many years ago might be able to help. She says they used nappies for older children when necessary and, given she is now 63, they must have been terries.

LyraSilvertongue · 02/05/2008 10:04

Sophiesmiles, have you thought about potty training rather than going back to mterry nappies? 3.5 is quite old to still be in nappies, unless it's only at night.
