Concerned about 12.5 month old

Hi all

My boy is 13 months in a couple of weeks but was a month early (if that makes a difference)
He can walk and crawl so physically fine.
He can clap, point and wave. He knows when you say clap to clap and when you say goodbye to wave (without prompting with the actions first) He plays peekaboo and if I say where's Daddy/where's Granny/where's the dog he looks at them. He will copy some sounds I make like ssss for snake, mooo for when I point at the cow in a book, fake coughs when we cough and sighs when we sigh.

However he doesn't say any words yet, other than 'uh oh' occasionally when he drops something and do do do for the dog. Although he says ddd/ daaa/doo doo for everything at the moment.
He has literally just learnt to walk this week and his babbling has seemed less for the last couple of weeks.
He also doesn't give me anything or pass me anything ? He is very confident with adults but doesn't like babies getting up in his space very much.
Should I be concerned? Is this all normal and age appropriate?

He also doesn't understand simple tasks like 'bring me a book'

Uh oh and do both count as words.
He sounds totally on track.

It’s been a while since mine were little but nothing that you have said sounds too unusual imo. My DD was a month early and although she was saying words at your DSs age, she didn’t walk until she was 17.5 months old. They really are all different.

He sounds just like my youngest 12.5 month old (born at 41 week) and honestly by my criteria he is a genius lol😂relax and enjoy this time, promise toddlerhood will make you want him to stop talking and running around at least for a minute😉

Don't worry. He does all the right things and sounds lovely!

Our oldest spoke in full sentences at 12 month. And she hadn't stopped.
Numbet 2 spoke at 3 years 4 months (we were worried, yes) and number 3 spoke at 2 years 8 months. The two youngst did say a few words and sounds. It wasn't all bookers but a lot of the children around nursery were the same level.

TheShellBeach · 04/10/2024 16:41

That sounds completely normal to me.

He is too young for that. They develop different skills at different times. He has been busy learning to walk so he can't be concentrating on learning to talk at the same time. It is very normal for one skill to remain static while a new skill is developing. He sounds absolutely normal and I think it would be reassuring for you to get a few books on child development that you can read and re-read and refer to over the next few years. They learn a huge amount in the first 5 years. The best thing you can do is talk to him, play with him and enjoy books with him.

Sounds completely fine.
To encourage him the best thing you can do is talk, keep up a running commentary of everything you do with him through the day. If you hand him something say what it is, drink, book etc etc. If he says anything back like he's trying to repeat but just making sounds, reply by saying "yes that's a book" rather than trying to correct- in his brain he is making the same sound you made
