Hi does anyone know what can cause this on my little boy? He's 3.5. He's not cold but he did have hand foot and mouth about two weeks ago. Should I bring him to get it checked out . This is his legs

Have definitely seen this on children before- like dappling on horses
( that’s what we called it as kids!)

It looks like where the veins are?

A medic may answer .

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 03/10/2024 20:00

We used to call it corned beef skin, totally normal. I'm not a medic!

I'm not a doctor. But DD often got mottled skin like that when she was wee, especially in the tail end of a virus.

I did actually google “ Dappled skin on children” later on and it came up with lots of pics of how I remember seeing it

The rash we were always told to look out for us the dreaded “ Meningitis rash “ where the spots don’t “disappear” when a clear glass was rolled over them.

But in those instances a child would likely be obviously unwell.

“Dappled legs” like in your pic I’d say are very normal in children 🙂

Corned beef legs?
Never heard them called that before, but kids can be very imaginative 😂

WolfFoxHare · 04/10/2024 20:57

My gran used to call them corned beef legs too. I used to get them
if I warmed myself in front of the fire.

Raggydollz · 04/10/2024 20:59

I thought this was just from being cold

Oh my goodness YES!!! 😂
That’s so triggering early childhood memories of cold houses when people often just had a fire to sit around - roasted legs , freezing backs.

“ Scorched legs” they were called- much redder looking than Mummabear’s pic.

My eldest DD's skin is always like this when she's chilly. It has been since she was born. Nothing wrong.

Yes! We didn’t have the heating on in any room except the sitting room, we had a coal fire in there. I used to stand there trying to get warm. My gran would say my legs would go mottled permanently if I didn’t too much.

Middle DC has this, it's more prominent when she's cold. It's her capillaries apparently. I always knew when there was a new member of staff at her nursery as I'd get a phone call anoit jer rash (no problem with that - obviously much better that they erred on the side of caution!).
