3 year old not eating at nursery & extremely hyperactive

Hi,

I'm a first time parent to a little boy, he’s just turned 3 in August then started nursery in September, so he’s only been there a few weeks. So one of the youngest in the class. He has always been extremely hyperactive, lots of people including doctors have made comments about him possibly showing signs of adhd (but that is an issue for another day)

my concern today is he goes every day from 8.50-12pm and they have lunch at 11.30 . He's always hungry , he eats breakfast and could easily eat snacks in between but they don’t provide that for the early session kids as lunch is quite early. So in theory he should eat the lunch . However I know it’s still early days but he so far is emptying his cup of water into his plate and creating a soup in his food . If he doesn’t do this he still doesn’t eat the food so the water isn’t the only issue. He apparently sits there messing about the whole time distracting the other kids, up and down - can’t sit still and uninterested in his lunches. He then comes home and says he’s “starving” and I have to make him lunch even though I’m paying for lunches at school so now paying twice really.

I dont want to give up right away so I’m going to see how this week goes and then have a word with the school and see what they suggest. Thinking maybe I could pick him up before lunch if they’d allow this but so far it’s just a waste at this time. I think nurseries expect them to be capable of everything as soon as they start. He’s only just turned 3 at home he’s supervised while he eats and for lunch he’ll have a sandwich, fruit and then sometimes yoghurt given separately so it’s obviously differing there too. I’m not sure how the other kids who are this young behave but my child is extremely hyperactive and easily distracted. He thrives off of a routine and maybe the nursery and food setting is just a lot all at once to settle into.

does anyone have any experience or advice with this?

I think it’s still early days and he needs time to settle in. I think one issue could be that you are collecting right after lunch, which is probably leading to some of the behaviour issues at lunch, but also he knows he will just go home and get a lunch. If he was staying for a full day, and his options were lunch or no lunch if he’s messing about, I bet he’d settle into eating lunch.

How have nursery suggested handling it? I wouldn’t be pleased with him pouring water everywhere and playing with his food during lunch, even if that’s not the issue. I’d want him better supervised or just ask them to remove water until he can sit and eat without pouring it out.
