? CMPA poo or normal

Hi- my one month old on apatmil (just formula feeding) has had loose stools for 3 weeks , constant wet darts and then the loose stools. Think she has reflux too, just wondering do these stools be normal for a newborn? Is it just her body getting use to the formula? Or does it look like something else? No mucus or blood noticed .

Hi OP. Looks similar to CMPA poops my DD had. She was put on Neocate in the end as Aptamil Pepti 1 wasn't working for her either.

Any other symptoms?

Morgan98 · 30/09/2024 04:25

@user242526 hi- yeah she :

  • is very congested has always been
  • coughing /wheezing
  • unsetteled after feeds
  • in pain when passing stools / farting (wet farts )
  • dry /flaky skin
  • loud stomach gurgling
  • reflux
  • back arching
  • coughing and gagging after feeding
  • hiccups lasting over 10mins

@Morgan98 that sounds similar to the symptoms my CMPA had. Keep a diary of her symptoms and note down each symptom she experiences everyday so you're armed with that information. Have you tried Omeperazole yet? They'll want to try that to rule out it just being reflux first. From what you're stating, seems to me like it's CMPA as reflux shouldn't really impact poop/skin

@user242526 hi, going to contact GP tomorrow but I know it’s definitely not reflux 100%. Have a feeling its cmpa, can you go ahead and try the milk or do you have to wait to see gp?

@Morgan98 You can buy them yourself, however, to see an actual difference you'd need to trial the milk for around 6-ish weeks. I can't remember exactly but I believe one tin of Neocate is around £30. You'd need a good few tins before you see a difference. If you can afford to buy them yourself and then trial them and if things improve then great - you can go to the GP armed with that information. However, if it's too pricey for you and you'd need them prescribed you'd need to get the GP to prescribe the tins and for that usually they have guidelines that they'd need to follow. I was certain that Omeperazole wouldn't help my DD's symptoms, but the doctor openly said he can't prescribe it without trying Omeperazole first.

@user242526 Yeahh okay they are expensive enough! Did the omeprazole help at all?

@Morgan98 they are! To be honest, not really no. She hated taking it and I'd feel awful trying to forcefully give it to her every morning.

The symptoms still continued as she needed Neocate to help ease those. She still has reflux/regurgitation (spitting up milk) but this doesn't cause her pain/discomfort anymore. The only thing is that at 10 months old now / she still doesn't really drink more than 5oz at a time - I think this is to do with the regurgitation

It is not necessarily one or the other. My daughter has both food allergies and reflux. To get her into a good place we needed to identify all of her allergens and have high dose reflux treatment too.
Her symptoms were similar to yours, I would speak to the GP x
