10 month old - chest recessions with every cold

Hi, my 10 month old boy has had colds since June - no surprise as he has an older brother in nursery and he himself has started nursery. His first bad cold was at 5 weeks and he was recessing and pulling in under the ribs/laboured breathing. Since then I've taken him to the gp and sometimes the hospital four times during other colds for the same issue. He now has it again and I'm waiting for the gp to calm back.

I know colds are to be expected, and back to back colds are standard at this age and given nursery etc. but I don't know any other baby who seems to have such breathing issues with every respiratory infection. At what point should this ring an alarm bell? Or is this actually just par for the course? The doctors I've seen all call him a happy wheezer - we've never had to stay in or been under particular monitoring as vital signs have always been fine and he is normally pretty cheerful.

The sleep deprivation is so insane at the moment 😭

hey my little boy (now 9) has been in hospital twice for low oxygen/chest infections, the pulling in between the ribs is one of the symptoms to watch for- so good for doing that, do you have an oximeter at home? it definitely helps to have one to hand, saves the back and forth to the doctors to check, because that is basically what they are looking for is if the infection is causing them to be low on oxygen, my little boy always has respiratory issues when he gets colds, but aslong as he is happy in himself and his oxygen levels are good im happy to not take him to doctors xx

Just to add my little girl (8months) currently has a nasty cold and cough, she had a temperature and some sucking in at the ribs (she kept wiggling her finger so couldn’t get her oxygen level lol) so i took her to doctors and her chest was clear 👍🏻 i worked out after to put my smart watch around her wrist and take her oxygen that way lol xx

My son was similar.... I went to manypaths... and some helped... he is intolerant to lots of foods and a whole host of everyday chemicals, without these in his immediate environment, he is much better. I found regular trips to the osteopath helped, especially when he was coming down with something and afterwards, the tension from the viruses, mucus production etc seemed to stay in his ribcage and shoulder girdle and the osteopath helped release it - I could see it immediately in how much more easily he was breathing and how it positively impact mucus production. Physio to help him breathe better, strengthen his shoulder girdle, blowing out candles, blowing up balloons (until we discovered that he was reacting to latex), lying on his tummy to play games, a bit like practicing the yoga position, cobra. I also found an essential oil that helped, high doses of vitamin C and dare I mention a forbidden word on MN - but homeopathy also helped and still does. Yes I am a hippy mom... but partly because it was so stressful and he also reacted REALLY badly, to the steroids he was given so I had to find another way.

Thanks so much both. I should probably get an oximeter and I'm not against trying homeopathy - in fact some of my friends have already recommended good providers for me. Much appreciated.

My son takes viruses and coughs badly and we've been in A&E a lot because of it. Same breathing issues. He has a reliever inhaler on repeat prescription now which helps. I am going to discuss steroid inhaler with them as well.
