Thin but warm coat for 15-month-old?

Good morning all,

My little boy is in a wheelchair buggy which needs adjusting by professionals rather than by me whenever he grows, and the clinics are not terribly accessible as they only run monthly. The winter coat I had bought him is too puffy for him to fit comfortably while still having his posture correctly supported. (It is one of the usual high-street puffa-style jackets).

He is currently wearing (comfortably!) thick woolly cardigans, which seem to be okay for autumn weather and for sizing in his chair, but I would really welcome any ideas for coats which are warm but are thinner than a puffa. The coat doesn't have to be waterproof as his wheelchair buggy has a rain cover. He is in size 12-18 months.

If anyone has any ideas for where to start looking, I'd be really grateful.

regatta have a big selection of kids coats etc of varying thickness.

i'd look at getting dungarees or a snow suit which can be much more comfortable for the child and avoids having either a gap at the tummy or too much fabric bunched up to sit on.

I love the Didrikson Rio Jackets for my kids. They aren't cheap but are super warm, waterproof and you can extend the sleeves so get a couple of years out of them at least. They're often on Vinted too.

IDK your budget but the Patagonia baby coats have a really heavy down insulation fill but somehow manage to fill really light- DC’s coats from there are a 700 fill but somehow about a third of the thickness of the north face one I have that is only 500.

Some people put their child's coat on backwards if they have tight postural supports.

A secondhand good quality down jacket is a good call, I think, much less bulky than the synthetic ones.

Another possibility might be a boiled wool coat or snugglesuit or all-in-one – the boiled wool texture is pretty windproof, so warmer than even a chunky jumper. A snugglesuit/all-in-one would keep his legs warm as well, and no gaps for draughts at the waist. Again probably one to hope to find secondhand!

Could you do a thick fleecy all in one, which wouldn't be as thick as a waterproof coat, but would be snuggly?

scientificexplanations · 27/09/2024 15:45

I was going to suggest a fleece onsie !

Thank you all for the fab ideas, I really do appreciate the help!

@Chiaseedz , he has been rocking his polar bear Bundlebean blanket today for the first time - great minds!

@AllBranEater , that's a brilliant idea - I will see whether the current coat works backwards.

I can foresee a bit of time on Vinted and eBay this weekend. I am hoping it won't get crazy chilly just yet as it will give me a bit of time to find a decent combo. It is expected he will walk in the longer term but it will likely be a good couple of years yet so if I can crack the coat this winter, that will be good to bear in mind for future.

I hadn't expected things like this once he was in his new chair - it is all a bit of a learning curve.
