Trying not to worry but don't want to ignore either if there is a problem

Our son is alomst 3 and just lately I am having to repeat myself when I talk to him. Not every time but enough for me to notice. He passed a test for deafness at a very young age, we had had him tested as he didn't react to any noise at all. I once stood behind him and banging a cymble. Nothing. He had some cranio treatment and that sorted him out. Just wondering now if there is a problem.

My 3yo is like this. I'm sure its normal to have to keep repeating myself to him.
Havent tried a cymbal though....

He may have glue ear. Might be worth a visit to your GP to discuss.

My dd did this when she had an ear infection. Poor thing never told us her ear hurt, and we kept getting cross 'cos we thought she was ignoring us!

You can ask to be referred for a hearing test. This is what I did with my dd1 then aged 3. They found that she had fluid behind both ears which would be causing her hearing loss. She had gromits inserted and now she can hear properly.

tiredlady · 21/04/2008 13:57

my 5 yo also passed his baby hearing test, but has now been found to have mild to moderate hearing loss due to glue ear. Why not ask your HV for a referral to audiology clinic if you are worried

NotABanana · 21/04/2008 14:02

Thanks all, and thanks too to Flibbertyjibbet. I knew I had spelt cymbal wrong once I had posted but couldn't think how it was supposed to be.

DO I need a GP or a HV appointment first.

BTW The HV hasn't called him for any of his development checks as we refused DD's 2 year ish one. Just wondering if he should have had another hearing test.

Does he hear if you quietly say something sacred like "sweeties"...?

DS was just VERY good at ignoring anything he didn't deem worth listening to - including loud noises.... whisper "chocolate" and he was there like a shot!

Can you go to your practise nurse - she may be able to check his ears for wax build up or something?

NotABanana · 21/04/2008 14:04

Just remembered, DH had grommets fitted but he and I don't know why. Just tried to ring MIL to ask but she is out.

yes the whispered 'sweetie' or 'ice cream' test is the height of technological diagnostic advance when it comes to 3 year olds and hearing

NotABanana · 21/04/2008 14:09

I tried the whispering chocolate thing and he doesn't always respond.

Ask him if his ears are hurting at all. Has he had a cold recently?

NotABanana · 21/04/2008 14:33

Not really. I wiped his nose tiwce last week but we were at the beach. He is asleep at the moment so I will ask him when he gets up.

If his ears hurting, or not hurting, I would just pop him along to the GP so they can have a quick look in his ears and refer him on if necessary.

I wouldn't panic - might just be a temporary thing.

NotABanana · 21/04/2008 14:38

TBH I am getting myself very worked up now. Just texted MIL to ask about Dh's grommets.

My DD now 4.6 was like this at 3, and she doesn't have any hearing problems - she is fine now - but I swear she new it winded me up so did it on purpose! My mum is deaf and I constantly have to repeat myself to her - even though she wears hearing aids - there is always some reason they are not working properly!

No - on a serious note - I think it was just a phase she went through - best to get ears checked though.

Just wanted you to know that sometimes it is a phase - and not necessarily a physical problem.

NotABanana · 21/04/2008 14:42

DH had them at 7 to help with hearing.

I know DS2 isn't doing it on purpose so I will get him checked out.
