Can't handle another wet winter

I wfh part time.
Have spent the past few winters doing all the usual toddler groups and soft play..even though DS has just stated school I can't handle spending the weekend sat around the house as he's crap at independent play or doing the same treadmill of soft play and swimming etc and I've been in the house all week mostly asides the odd gym visit either working or doing housework. The weather forecast here is shocking for the next month.
Does everyone feel like this? I feel like I'm wishing time away for better weather or until he's older. We do the occasional play date but house isn't big enough or other people don't have only child so not as bothered.

I get depressed in the long fucking wet winter, and walking the dog twice a day in it is miserable for her and me. OP I hear you, last winter nearly finished me off. This afternoon I had to go back out in wet “waterproofs” that still hadn’t dried from the morning walk. Oh and our town is flooding, ds school was closed because it flooded on Friday. Sigh…..

God, I knew this thread would bring out all the sanctimonious wet-weather fuckers.

  • Puddles
  • Puddlesuits
  • Hot chocolate
  • Picnics
  • "Wrap up warm"
  • Wellies
  • "cosy"

Have I missed anything? Anyone mentioned baking with toddlers yet?

I'm with you OP. I have toddler twins and a primary age child; I literally and metaphorically jumped my last puddle around Jan 2021.

I'd make a list of 8-10 things you can do in circulation and have them in sight ahead of the weekend. For me that would be: playdate swap with another child; nearest museum for the morning; pool swim; soft play; borrow neighbour's dog for the morning; go to shop and spend £2 on a colouring book, stickers etc to do at home; go for a drive to listen to music and try to spot x or y thing out the window.

Drive to drive through starbucks while trying to mentally block out whatever annoying audiobook dc have requested is sometimes a nice break

Wet weather fuckers. And puddle suit wankers @RampantIvy mentioned.
These are my nemesis.
It baffles me why people wonder why you're miserable going for a walk in the rain..because it SHIT maybe.

Cinema is another one, once you hit primary age. I've even had Saturday mornings in bloody Ikea in a pinch.

WhitegreeNcandle · 23/09/2024 21:13

Messy church or the kids family service was good for mine when they were 10 and under. Two hours of them being entertained by others whilst I had a coffee or zoned out.

Would he play rugby? Fills a big part of a Sunday and is often around £100 for the year. Can then justifiably sit on the sofa and eat roast dinner after!

Work more hours in a job outside home
Sounds like you need more social interaction
Then being stuck at home with kid in rain at weekend won't be sobad.

rainsofcastamere · 23/09/2024 21:23

I'll tell you what's shitter than going in the rain. Going in the fucking sun. Baking hot, plastered in suntan cream so you're clammy as owt, flies, wasps and gnats bothering you, everyone is BBQing as though they haven't got indoor cooking equipment, men wear vests 🤢 it's shit. Now, I'm not saying fucking about in the rain is ideal, I mean I wear glasses so I either can't see for the rain on them or they steam up as soon as I get inside but I'd rather walk in the rain than the sun. Any day of the week. Give me cold, crisp autumnal/winter weather and I would be and have been out all day in it.

The rain doesn't stop me or the kids going out, cos otherwise id die of boredom but the sun does. Just be cold and dry for fucks sake.

I used to love days out at this stage. National Trust etc with a picnic.

In the rain? Wouldn't you get soggy sandwiches?

The places near us have sheltered spaces for picnicking in.

Chateauneufdu · 23/09/2024 21:37

Lame.

Nursemumma92 · 23/09/2024 21:45

Bowling is a good one that my DD aged 6 loves in bad weather or arcades. Going for a hot chocolate or yummy treat. National trust places with a house to explore but we are also those people who love a puddlesuit and go for a woodland walk in the rain- not torrential though and totally understand that it's not for everyone.

Agree - we’re in Canada with snow for many months but we’re still outside most days. There’s no bad weather just bad clothing

There totally is such a thing as bad weather. Memories of the January 2021 lockdown still make me shudder. It was cold, dark and it never stopped raining. We’re out in the sticks, miles from the coast and the uk countryside turned to muddy slush. Then, for one magical week, it snowed here. The ground hardened. We bought a sledge and went to a nearby hill and spent day after day helter skeltering down it. We came home ruddy cheeked for warm drinks, feeling like we’d been at a ski resort. The sky was clear and bright. Then, the rains returned, washed the snow away and we were back in misery land again.

in short, I feel your pain op. Pray for snow?

VivaVivaa · 23/09/2024 22:11

I absolutely agree OP.

We are puddle-suit wankers because my two are FERAL without fresh air. But it’s an absolute chore on a pissing wet day compared to a warm, sunny one

lochmaree · 23/09/2024 22:15

Love the train ride idea as pp said. I did this a few weeks ago for the first time and it was hard work at the other end in Bristol but the train ride itself was bliss!

Don't think I've got anything that hasn't already been suggested but I understand. My DH works Saturdays too so it's just me and 2 DC at home (4 and 2), usually I go swimming in the morning then insist they play argue in the afternoon. Some setting up activities inside eg playdough, painting, water painting, water play, kinetic sand, Duplo, train tracks then semi leaving them to it.

EveryKneeShallBow · 23/09/2024 12:49

Buy good outdoor clothes and get outside! You can enjoy woodland walks, the beach, barbecue lunches, etc whatever the weather. You can also walk around town and do scavenger hunt type things that you see. Find the biggest tree, the reddest leaf. The biggest puddle to splash in. Etc.

Christ of almighty. That sounds like an absolute nightmare. 😖

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 23/09/2024 22:21

I must be a weirdo because I love rain.

minipie · 24/09/2024 00:04

Puddle suit wankers 😆

Such a good phrase
