Help! Cradle cap

My nearly 6 month old has had cradle cap from 2 months, a lot has cleared it was really bad but for the last month the last bit isn't shifting, there's a few patches left I've tried the Friday baby brush - haven't used the comb as I'm too scared! I've tried baby oil, coconut oil and two cradle cap shampoos, one from Asda and the other prescribed by gp. I do t know what else I can do, please can someone help, her new hair is growing and I don't want her to end up with further bald patches if the cradle cap takes a few more months this to shift

Cradle cap is completely normal and harmless. You don't need to do anything. It doesn't cause bald patches!

Avie29 · 21/09/2024 20:07

Pop some baby oil on their head, leave it an hour or two and pop them in the bath, i use a headlice comb to gently comb over the cradle cap and it lifts off easily, repeat next day if some wont come up easy the first time xx

It's not harmful. It'll come off of its own accord eventually, but if you find it unsightly, you can oil your child's scalp with olive or wheatgerm oil or something similarly nice and natural, leave it overnight and then gently peel it off in the coming days. Easy peas. DD2 still remembers me picking off her last bits of cradle-cap (she was obviously quite a bit older than your DD).

I used to use olive oil rather than baby oil which worked better for us. Left it on at least overnight and used regularly

Branster · 21/09/2024 20:21

Only ever used olive oil and it worked really quickly. I didn't even know there were other options.

Wasywasydoodah · 21/09/2024 20:21

Yep, oil here too. My 10 year old still has it (I imagine it’s called something else by this stage) and combing it our still makes me happy!

Did you mean you have this? The frida brush and comb set? Why are you scared if the comb? DS1 had cradle cap and it seemed to last forever and smelt really musty. I used the comb and brush with DS2 and it cleared up so much faster.

Yes that's the one, I don't know i was worried it would be too hard on her head or cut her, maybe I'm just being over dramatic

Loyon

Covidwoes · 21/09/2024 20:24

Dentinox shampoo worked really well on both my DDs. DD (age 3) randomly got it again recently, and dentinox worked a treat again!

Oldermum84 · 21/09/2024 20:29

I left my first DS's cradle cap as was told it was harmless and would go and it didn't and when I tried to pick it out years later his hair would come out.

With my second I moisturised his head X2 per day with aveeno baby (easy as he had hardly any hair) and then I would gently scrape the back of my thumbnail over it, from the back to the front of his head and it would come straight off. I called it his "head cheese". Satisfying.

Dopaminefuelled · 21/09/2024 20:44

Use the normal baby moisturiser and put a generous amount on their head 30mins before bath time. Wash hair and comb out.
I used a nit comb and bioderma baume

tealandteal · 21/09/2024 20:50

Go for the comb OP! It’s so strangely satisfying to see the flakes lift off when you comb the hair. It’s a very gentle comb, try it on your own hair if you’re worried. I used it on DS2 since about 3 months.

TommyandGina · 21/09/2024 20:55

We used olive oil as recommended by the midwife. This was over 20 years ago and can't recall any problems once we'd used it, or having to use it regularly.

MidnightPatrol · 21/09/2024 21:01

Loyon left on overnight / naps to soak + nit comb

narns · 21/09/2024 21:26

We used the comb linked above on my DD when she was 12 months old after it failed to go away on its own. I was surprised that the comb didn't bother her at all, and it was super effective! We used it about three times and it was entirely gone never to return

Topseyt123 · 21/09/2024 21:36

I used baby oil on all three of my DDs for this.

I coated their heads in it at bedtime and left it on overnight. Then I just combed it all through in the morning and it simply came straight off.

CharlotteBog · 21/09/2024 21:50

DS2 had the worst cradle cap my GP had ever seen. He had some steroid cream to prevent infection behind his ears and around his nose. I say this only to indicate how bad it was. Obviously the steroid cream was used very sparingly for short periods of time and only on the very bad bits. On the rest I used olive oil which worked very well.
At 15 the boy is a bear! Once it cleared his skin was beautiful.

Donotgogentle · 21/09/2024 21:53

Head & Shoulders. Two washes cleared it for my then 3 year old.

Grrrrrrrrr8 · 21/09/2024 21:53

La roche posay lipikar cream wash. Suitable for newborns. Was recommended to me and worked a treat. Took a few washes but was better every time until it went after about 5-10 washes.

tulipsunday · 23/09/2024 09:20

Dentinox worked for us alone with a soft plastic brush to lift off flakes
