What’s your routine and how often do you use creams/lotions on baby face, if any?

See lots of differing views of people not using or using moisturisers, emollients, coconut oil, lotions etc on face.

Some daily some after a bath and some never (prefer natural) or dependant on skin conditions.

What’s your routine? And is is dependent on their age?

DD2 is 5months and we are currently in a research study around baby's skin and links to ezcema, allergies, asthma etc. So I'm doing something totally different to with my eldest! We are in the group that is bath only once a week, and minimal products. So we do bathtime every Friday, plain water, childs farm baby shampoo, bit of sudocrem if any nappy rash and coconut oil on skin (not face). The rest of the week, it is just a plain water top and tail to clean up. The study ends when DD2 is six months when her skin will be examined by a specialist and compared to the other group who have been allowed to bathe as often as they like and use whatever products they like. It will be really interesting to see if there is any difference! With my eldest, I used minimal products on her face, but i did use a protective balm in the winter as she used to get very windchapped. Hoping the weather stays mild until the study finishes so I can try this with DD2.

Absolutely no lotions and potions. They’re not needed at all (same applies to most adults). The skincare industry have managed to convince us (mostly women) that we need to spend a fortune on these products that don’t do anything. In many cases they’re actually doing us a lot of harm.

Take a look at this:

DC are 6 and 8. Never used any lotion or anything like that. Only suncream when needed and a couple of times of prescribed ointments for specific issues.

Never crossed my mind to put anything on them regularly. But then I don't put anything on myself either so it's just not a thing on my radar.

We're supposed to be putting lotions on our kids 😱 My heartbeat raised a moment there!

Just the occasional suncream for us (although god knows why as DC doesn't burn EVER)

Spomb · 20/09/2024 11:31

Suncream only and we tend to try and cover up where possible (rash vest, hat, etc). Always sun cream for face though and wash it off each day. If no sun cream then full bath every 2 days, minimal products. They’re skin is so pure, I hate putting lotions and potions on it.

The worry is that many are full of chemicals and parabens so best to avoid where possible.

Thanks all seems like everything is in the same camp! Currently bath LO twice a week with Water and occasional child’s farm fragrance free bath shampoo.

Other than that it’s water and cotton wool when needed.

I've never used any creams regularly but would use a baby moisturiser when they had dry skin on their face. I'm not too stressed about chemicals though and they started using all types of bubble baths once they were toddlers. Didn't seem to dry their skin out and it made bathtime fun. We had a bath every night as part of the bedtime routine but as they got older they often didn't want to, so we offer to have a bath every night and usually it's a few times a week.
As an adult I've used serums and moisturisers since my 20s.

Never used anything - she’s 4 and I still have the tub of sudocrem I bought before she was born in an effort to be prepared - used a tiny fraction of it and most of that was for me - it’s sheer luck I know but she hardly ever suffered with nappy rash. Once after she was left in a dirty nappy for a long time when in laws were babysitting, and maybe the very odd spot another time.

I have really noticeably soft skin on my body - as in people comment often! Barely ever put anything on it in terms of moisturiser, only really the rare time I remember or a bit of aftersun if needed on holiday. So it’s kind of persuaded me that nothing is actually needed - DD’s is perfect and I don’t see why I’d mess with that!

(Skin on my face is a different story, and now I’m mid 40s it’s definitely caught up with my on my hands which suddenly look ancient so maybe I should have been paying more attention to those!)

As pp, I never routinely put anything on my babies or children's skin. They started their own skincare routine in their teens. I think it is quite a new thing to have "skincare" routines for babies and children. Money making exercise by the cosmetics industries

Only ever to treat eczema.

I used oil or lotion for baby massage, but not on the face.
