Young toddler behaviour advice

Hi,

Im looking for some friendly advice on how to manage my 19 month old. To set the scene he isnt yet understanding of many things i say and a little delayed with speech (yes I'm handling this )

DS has started having awful tantrums at any slight inconvenience to him.

The main ones are when toys are taken from him, he wants to take non water suitable toys into the bath with him, when i take it away nicely & explain the toy cannot go in the water. He screams and screams and screams the whole bedtime routine. It's as awful. He cant understand why id take things from him. No distraction technique works.

Another daily example - he smashes toys against my radiators very roughly, i asked him to stop and redirect him, he continues to go back and repeat it, i try to distract him. Does not work. So i take the toy and explain why iv taken it. He will have a screaming fit for 20 mins and counting. I try to calm him during this time.

He is still very young and he must be frustrated that he cant explain what he wants to say.

Any advice would be welcome, id like to know if theres a better way to address such behaviour and boundaries. I don't want him to become a spoilt child getting his own way when he is older.

I had one of these , stay strong and keep going /don't give in. It will pass and they won't have learned that screaming gets their way and eventually they won't be upset as often or as long. She's 4 now and we do have the odd tantrum but it's a million times better than it was

@blipblopblip its a relief to hear your situation was like mine and improved!

He finds any telling of funny and just does the bad behaviour over and over! I hate taking things off him, but i feel like he wont learn otherwise!

Stay as calm as you can so no reaction /attention for the bad behaviour. It's infuriating at times and I honestly doubted myself but it seems to have worked for us

Couldn’t read and run, my son is the same age and same behaviour. Also delayed speech too - if you don’t mind me asking what are you doing to help this?

he is the same hitting radiators and throwing things in the bath, he has now started putting things in the toilet now pulling the lid up. I am just saying no and removing him away or closing the door etc. like yours he cries and also now bends down and has a tantrum on the floor. All I’m doing is trying not to give in and pander to him as I don’t want him to think a tantrum I run to him etc when it’s more frustration rather than him hurt, no idea if this is right or wrong as I am a first time mum!
