Is 5pm way to early for bedtime??

Both DC have nasty colds, DS2 (7mo) is a few days ahead of DS1 (3yo) and seems to be much worse, also teething, so dosed up on calpol and still very irritable and wanting to be held/bf all day. He napped for 1.5hrs this morning, waking at 11.45am but has refused every attempt at a nap this afternoon - despite being obviously very tired. Night sleep has been very disturbed last few nights.

Is it ridiculous to start trying to put him down for bed in an hour or so? Aiming for a a 5pm sleep? He usually goes down around 7-8pm so 5pm feels like a big difference.

Both my children are pretty low sleep needs so I’m slightly worried about an obscenely early wake tomorrow!

Do you think I’d be better off keep trying for nap and put him to bed much later as he’ll have had a late nap?

3yo will probably go to bed around 7.30pm as usual. I’ll be doing bedtime solo as DH works late tonight.

I think 7.30pm is quite late for a 3 year old.

I always took the approach that when they were poorly I let them sleep whenever they could.

If he goes to sleep at 5pm then leave him to it, you might end up with a crappy night he might sleep through, there is no way to forecast it, just encourage as much sleep as you can.

My 3 year old usually goes to sleep at 8pm. When he was recently ill he slept by 6pm.

Thanks all, baby went to sleep
at 5.15pm and still sleeping, 3yo still awake and doesn’t look remotely tired…interested in how 7.30pm be a late bedtime for a 3 year old when it’s a struggle to even get him down for that time.

Don’t fret about 7:30 being ‘late’ for a 3 year old. Different DC need different things. If DS1 was put to bed at 7:30 he was up at 5am aged 3. He isn’t much different now aged 11. Bed at 8:30 and up at 6. Luckily now he doesn’t wake everyone else.

A good, long sleep does me no end of good when I’m poorly. No reason I’m aware of why that wouldn’t apply to tiny humans too.

My almost 3 year old always says he's tired and asks to go to bed earlier when he is poorly and it doesn't tend to mean he will wake up at ridiculously early though, just often needs that little bit extra sleep. Hope you have an easy night!

I cannot be fussed about 7.30pm bedtime for a 3 year old. If that's his naturally sleep time then that good. My DD is 2y5m and she goes to bed later than that as she only sleeps 10h at night. As they are both ill I would just let them sleep when they need to and just hope they stay asleep later in the morning. My DD definitely sleeps more when she is poorly which is great as I usually feel poorly at the same time.
