Baby constantly pulling off of bottle

Hi all,

I was hoping for a bit of advice - so my 6 month old seems to do this thing when she is feeding and she constantly pulls off of the bottle? Then she can't get the bottle back in her mouth quick enough, has a few sips for maybe 10 seconds then pulls off again and then repeat.

She's done this pretty much from day dot but seems to have gotten worse lately. The teat is a slow flow (a MAM 1) but I've also tried a 2 and 3 and the same thing happens!

The only time she takes a bottle with no interruptions is during her night feeds or when she's about to fall asleep.

Any advice would be much appreciated as feeds take about 10x as long at the minute 😂.

Thanks xx

I have no advice sorry, just wanted to say your not alone as my baby does exactly the same thing! 6 months next week, done it on and off the whole time (this last week it's been every single feed!). We use MAM size 2, he chokes on a 3. Hopefully someone has some advice for you.

Similarly to PP, I've had the exact same issue too!! But now my 3 month old is doing the same thing to my breast as well as my Mam bottles (teat 1). Same as you, once she spits out the bottle, her lips get so tightly closed that I can't even get the bottle back into her mouth again. Can be frustrating. Following thread for advice

My daughter was like this only with breastfeeding, she went to second long feeds stop and pulling on and off throughout. For her it was a mix of silent reflux and food allergies. Desperate to feed but feeding hurt. I think she might have a tongue tie too, it's become more obvious as she has aged, she's now 4. We had 3 assessments as a newborn which ruled it out but I can now see that her movement up and down isn't as good as her in out movement

My baby does this too. Im thinking maybe teething. His bottom teeth are coming through so maybe they hurt. Dont know though

My baby has been the fussiest drinker since day 1. Honestly horrendous.

This is what worked for us (he's now 7months)

  • dont hold him to drink , he lies down on the floor/sofa or lies in pram.
  • limit distractions where possible
  • no snacking - 4 full bottles a day and one smaller bottle a night (hoping this cuts soon). If he is messing around on the bottle, we don't drag it out anymore as I think it was causing him to not be hungry enough for the next as it took so long to finish!

I would reconsider moving up the teats though and trialling for a few days. Size 1 would be quite frustrating at this age.

Thankyou guys! Good to know I'm not the only one who has this issue and really appreciate the advice.

Lessening distractions when she's feeding has certainly helped and I'll buy more of the 2 flow teats tomorrow.
