14 month old won’t drink milk anymore

Hi all,

My son is almost 14 months old and after his 1st year vaccinations he suddenly became intolerant to dairy (this is currently under investigation and he’s off dairy at the moment and doing a lot better)

He liked oat milk at the beginning but has just stopped taking a bottle, just refuses when it’s offered, could be his teeth as he has a lot coming through at once.

He seems to be drinking a lot of sugar free flavoured water as he hates regular water, and has been sick afterwards a couple times. He has suffered terribly from reflux since he was born.

My question is, I’ve read he’s meant to have 1-4 cups of water a day up to 32oz, and 2 cups of milk. If hes not drinking milk is it safe to give him more water? Obviously I don’t want him to suffer with water intoxication.

many thanks 🤗

My dd has always been Intolerant to cows milk and has never drunk anything other than water. I would wean him off flavoured water though, that's a lot of sweeteners.

The flavoured water could be what is upseting his tummy. It’s full artifical sweetners and flavourings.

Perhaps he doesn’t want milk because he’s eating enough food to not need it.

I thought the recommended amount of water at this age was between 8 and 32. floz?

I agree with the others, I'd wean him off the flavoured water. You could try watering it down?

If he's not drinking milk at all, as well as getting enough calcium you need to make sure you replace the fat and protein too.

So things like offering oily fish 2 to 3 times a week, adding a little Olive Oil to his food a couple of times a week should help.

Have you tried some foods that are fortified with calcium too, like White sliced bread and Ready Brek?

Neither of mine drank milk after their first birthdays, or had any dairy in their food.

They are perfectly strong and healthy adults.

I’ll try watering it down, hopefully I’ll get him into just plain old water eventually ❤️

Yes it is between 8-32floz.

He eats well most days, he has some fish when he doesn’t just throw it on the floor, he has a varied diet, of pasta with veggies, both white and dark meat (although he’s not really a fan of either) fish, beans. He has white and brown bread, soya yoghurt at the moment.

havent tried ready brek so will give that a go, and I’ll get some olive oil in his food, thank you x

Do you give your son a multivitamin with calcium in it?

As that's what we always gave DD. We then found out she is lactose intolerant.

It is actually quite common.

And as he can't drink cows milk, and won't drink plant drinks/milk he needs to just drink plain water.
