Play ideas for 8mo

Feel a bit stupid writing this but I have an epic lack of imagination and am struggling to entertain my 8mo DS. He’s a grouchy baby at the best of times (maybe as he seems to be constantly teething) and I think he’s just very bored. He has a few toys but doesn’t seem that interested. He’d literally rather sit on the sofa and chew the remotes! Though even that only buys a few mins.

We do singing/dancing/reading/chatting all the time. And we do go out but it’s hard work tbh - he hates being in the pram (or sling) and there’s just nowhere to walk near here. Very few baby groups either.

Any recommendations for activities or toys to try? Water sensory mats any good? Do you do treasure baskets and if so what with? (EVERYTHING ends up in his mouth or he just bashes himself in the head with stuff 🙄)

He can roll back to front, sit up (mostly) unaided but can’t crawl, if that’s relevant.

DD always liked a bath, I took a cushion in to sit on and let her play in an inch of bubbly water till she got bored.

Other things that worked well were:

  • pots and pans to bang and clank
  • an underbed storage sized plastic box with cheapest aldi own rice crispies or cheerios in and let her scoop them with various plastic cups and spoons
  • you can also blend the rice crispies into dust so it's like edible sand when they're a bit older and let them draw pictures in it with their fingers or spoons.
  • those foil emergency blankets you can get from the camping shop chopped into big squares were very entertaining, shiny, crinkly, able to crumple them up.
  • washed plastic drinks bottles with beads or pasta or rice in them make a good noise when shaken about.
  • treasure boxes were just random things I found in the house with interesting textures - a scarf, above mentioned bottle with beads or buttons in it, tumble dryer hedgehog spiky ball thing, scraps of grease proof paper, fuzzy sock, measuring spoons connected at the handle so they could shake them about, a blown up balloon to bat around.

Great suggestions, thank you! I think the pots and pan bashing will be particularly popular 😂

I had a baby like this. I found moving from room to room helped so he got a change of scenery.
