Pushchair for muddy walks

I currently have a yoyo stored in the car boot for shopping and out in the park etc as it’s compact and easy to take out/put away etc.
But now the weather is getting colder and wetter I’ve realised it’s a pain to push around in the park and across grass, it’s so difficult and gets on my nerves plus the wheels gets the fabric all muddy and I’ve just bought a new colour way. sorry that was a bit of a rant!

Anyhow I’m looking for another pushchair that I can keep in the boot for when we go to parks that I can get muddy and won’t be so precious about. Ideally I’d like it to be as compact as possible but not expecting it to fold down for cabin size, just hoping it doesn’t take over the whole boot! (Previously had a Cruz which I found cumbersome). Also easy to fold and put up and of course easy to push across grass and muddy terrain. Thank you!

You need a three wheeler .. out n about nipper sport is incredible and you can take wheels off in car

doodleschnoodle · 15/09/2024 22:23

Nipper for sure. Workhorse of a pram, handles any terrain. It's not that small though when folded, but you need a proper suspension and tyres for going over uneven terrain.

Mildred01 · 16/09/2024 10:54

Thanks for your suggestions, it definitely looks robust but still quite big to keep in the car. Will keep it as an option.

I was also looking at

  • hauck rapid 3
  • hauck runner
  • baby jogger city mini

if anyone has any thoughts on these. Thank you

I've had the baby jogger city mini and while it's better than the yo-yo for mud it's nothing like as good as the nipper. The fold is amazing though! If you're just meaning a bit of a waterlogged park it will be fine, if you're wanting country walks after rain it probably is going to be a bit of a struggle.

BlueChampagne · 16/09/2024 12:53

Sling/backpack?

EverybodyWantsTo · 16/09/2024 12:56

Definitely out and about nipper, I'd not get the sport though as the steering is more difficult and wheels are bigger so it's a more awkward fold. You don't want to be taking muddy wheels on and off.

The double out and about fitted fine in my Yaris, it's not a teeny fold but pretty flat so compact and won't take over the whole boot.

GoneIsAnotherSummersDay · 16/09/2024 12:56

I had a Jane Epic. Absolutely loved it and it handled woodland walks, muddy fields, tracks etc. really well. Really small turning circle. Can steer one handed with ease when on smoother surfaces.

The chassis folds really quite compactly, is light, and the wheelbase is narrower than many all-terrain pushchairs so you can get it through doorways with ease.

Oh how I loved that pushchair and the lifestyle of that phase of parenting!

Singleandproud · 16/09/2024 12:58

Buy some shower caps that live in the boot for over the muddy wheels

Would one of the bike trailer type push chairs work? I believe you can get quite big children in them andload them up for park and beach days

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 16/09/2024 12:58

Out n abour nipper. The normal not the sport. It can fold quite flat and wheels easily come off if needed to make it flatter. We've managed to fit it in the boot of the car with a weeks worth of stuff for a cornwall break and putting it on the top with the wheels off. Its been on many a foreign holiday and is great for city and county breaks as takes curbs and stairs like a pro. It handles sand amazingly. Love it.

Baby Jogger Summit X3

Mildred01 · 16/09/2024 19:57

Thank you for your suggestions everyone so much to think about! It looks like out and about is the clear favourite though!
I wanted to note that it’s mainly for walking around woodlands, mixed with pathways and national trusts, places so not necessarily country walks.

to the pp who suggested sling carrier/ backpack, I wish he would go still go in them but he’s such an energetic being since he found he could run , he won’t stay in one unfortunately. I am hoping he will again because I’d love that!

Just a question about the nipper - would it be ok to literally live in the boot and get a weekly food shop amongst other daily things or is it going to be a right pain in the backside and also would it fit in with a wheelchair?

I am very close to getting one I think!

Definitely absolutely fine with shopping etc, wheelchair would depend on your car. I'd have it in the boot and then try it out (either from a shop or if you're buying 2nd hand).

If you're getting new, Very do a 20% off for new customers and they sell them. They last forever though so I've had a couple second hand (changing to get my favourite colour and moving from double to single).

Honestly even on just a national trust site they are a total different experience to anything else, they just glide over rough ground and turn on a half penny. Really beautiful to push.

Trust me I've been through a million pushchairs and these are the best, only downside is that the basket is not as good as the big ones on say an Uppababy vista. I found it fine though with storing stuff in the hoods as well, and with a bag hung over the handle bars or a pushchair organiser thing strapped on.

Mildred01 · 17/09/2024 11:04

Thanks @EverybodyWantsTo loads of helpful info! I’ll be getting it second hand as it will be my third buggy in rotation 😅 so don’t want to spend loads on one left in the car! But hopefully I should get lots of use in years to come too.

To be fair no basket can ever match the uppababy! It was our first stroller and such a disappointment going out with all your stuff after that, especially with the yoyo!

I am definitely swayed towards the nipper and looking for one but also torn between the baby jogger. As you’ve said I think I’ll see how it fits in the boot and go from there. So hard!

We had an out and about nipper. Fantastic pushchair!

EverybodyWantsTo · 17/09/2024 11:24

If you're on Facebook there's a good group about buying them secondhand, a real fount of info and good place to check prices etc.

Spenditlikebeckham · 17/09/2024 11:26

Whatever you get buy a few shower caps. Keeps the wheels covered and away from the fabric of your car when you shove it in!!

Makingchocolatecake · 17/09/2024 22:50

I have a hauck runner 3 large wheels which fits in my fiesta boot. The wheels are also very easy to take on/off to make it even smaller.

purpleme12 · 17/09/2024 22:53

Loved my babyjogger city mini

Mildred01 · 20/09/2024 10:33

Ok so I bought the nipper second hand which I initially loved. It fits really well in the boot when folded and isn’t as big as I expected, even when in use. It is fantastic to push as all you lovely people have recommend BUT it hurts my wrists so much. I’ve tried adjusting the handle bar to different heights but I think it’s because it’s quite narrow it’s causing weight and pressure on my joints. I don’t quite know why or what it is, I’m 5’3 so maybe because I’m short and the height isn’t right.

I previously had wrist problems after I gave birth and had to have physio and was offered steroid injections but declined as it slowly went away. I found it all really difficult and painful, couldn’t wash my hair or brush my teeth/ hold the baby without crying in pain so I don’t want the same thing to happen.

My wrists are really hurting today, I’ve only used the nipper twice so think I have to let this go! I’ll give it another week or two and then it’s back to the drawing board.

Anyone tried baby jogger city elite?
mountain buggy urban jungle?

Thanks all x

Oh that's really disappointing.

It sounds crazy, but I had a lot of wrist problems when DC were babies and it ended up actually being referred pain from a problem in my neck -i would never have believed this but the physio suggested it and gentle neck stretches really helped. Just in case that helps stop it getting worse over the next day or so.

GoneIsAnotherSummersDay · 20/09/2024 15:25

Whereabouts are you @Mildred01 If you're in the NE, PM me. I'm selling the Jane Epic I mentioned above for a token amount.
