7 year old and puppy fat

My 7 year old was always fairly skinny but over the summer has gained puppy fat.
They are quite a picky eater, so often eat the same things, but I think quite healthily. Can anyone tell me if I’m way off the mark with their diet here?

Breakfast
Either a bagel and an egg, or Greek yoghurt with fruit. Occasionally porridge (probably more often as it gets colder!) and occasionally honey hoops cereal with fruit.

Lunch
At school tends to go for the safety of the salad bar - cheese, ham, tomato, cucumber, noodles… similar at home tbh

Dinner
Pasta, or more recently yellow pea pasta, with peas, sweetcorn, cheese.
Pizza
Tortellini
Cheese on toast with tomato soup

Now I’m typing this out I’m realising dinner is not great. They aren’t big on eating meat, and won’t eat anything in a sauce. Any ideas very much welcomed!

Physically - we go on a lot of walks. Enjoys bike riding, roller skating, playgrounds. Now school is back, lots of running about at break and in PE. So hopefully that will help matters.

So in summary, am I making food mistakes? And what meals can people recommend?
Thank you!

Meals seem fine (if not a bit carb heavy but thats fine for a child as they need the energy), what kind and volume of snacks is she eating? I think puppy fat is normal and she probably will lose it as she gets taller

It's probably portion size rather than what they are eating. Might be due a growth spurt

MultiplaLight · 15/09/2024 19:00

What's her portion sizes? Could they be too large?

Nothing you've said sounds horrendous
Is she due a grow ?

I think the portion sizes are okay. For example we bought the thin bagels for them instead of normal ones. But perhaps dinner portions are on the larger side now I think about it - will plough through a huge bowl of pasta. I’ll watch that.
I also wondered whether a big grow was imminent. They are already tallest in the class, but have tall genes!
Thanks so much for your answers.

Don't overestimate how much running around is done at school, even pe will be alot of getting changed and listening, taking it in turns

She's likely to stretch out soon and probably due a growth spurt. It's probably portion size rather than content but I'd look to add more protein /nuts / seeds etc to porridge and to snack on to help reduce hunger but up nutritional calories.

Elpheba · 15/09/2024 19:04

I think probably try to squeeze in some protein where you can- I know it’s tricky when they are picky though. I’m adding a slice of ham or similar on the side if they’re not eating much other protein at that meal. But I’d say meals are fine and maybe they are due a growth spurt.

I think what she’s eating sounds fine, except maybe a bit lacking in fruit and veg. I’d try to add in more fruit and veg at every meal.

And what’s she eating between meals? Most dc do a lot of snacking between meals, especially during the summer and it’s easy for that to be convenience foods.
