Vitamin D

Due to EBF, at 5 day MW appt we were told to get vitamin D drops for baby. We got them and started giving baby 1ml, however he started being fussy in the evening.
We have tried different ways of giving him it

  • we've given smaller doses throughout day
  • different times of the day
  • via dropper, spoon, nipple (that was messy)
  • we've given quarter and half the recommended dose
But still be fussed. So after about a week we gave up and stopped giving him them. We had our 6 week HV appt and she gave healthy start version which is 5 drops. On first day gave him the 5 and he was extremely fussy. Day 2 didn't give him any - he was, what we deem as his normal fussy. Day 3 gave him 3 drops, a little more fussier and earlier than normal. Day 4 & 5 - 2 drops same as day 3.

I'm going to continue with the 2 drops per day as I feel it is better to have some than none but I was wondering if anyone else had issues with giving vitamin D and what the solution was?

Tyia.

What do you mean by "fussy"?

He won't settle.
We check his nappy and change it if it's needing done.
We try cuddle him but he cries and wriggles, singing/talking to him doesn't calm him, neither does the shh sound or white noise.
When near the breast he'll root but then when breast exposed he won't latch.
Sometimes he'll settle when being walked around, sometimes he needs to be bounced, patted on the bum, shh'd and walked around before it even touches the sides.

It’s very normal for newborn babies to be fussy as they wake up a bit. Can sometimes be due to reflux/allergies/feeding problems but most babies would have sone fussy periods. Maybe get his latch checked by a breastfeeding professional if having problems with that. Probably nothing to do with the vitamin D drops.

There will be zero link to your baby fussing and the vitamin drops. Baby is just being baby.

Healthy start are the best as it's only 5 drops so very easy to administer. I put a drop at a time on his dummy. The drops are tiny. Do one drop at a time on your finger and just swipe gently on his tongue. No bother.

Can you not try a different brand to see if that would work ?

He isn't fussy when he wakes up, just gives cues he's hungry.
His latch is fine, as no issues in weight gain or nipple tenderness.
He does have a fussy couple of hours between 5-10pm, but they only started after we began giving the drops. That could be a coincidence but when we had the pause between the 2 brands we've used his fussing calmed down.
He doesn't take a dummy (we've tried in the hopes to calm the fussy period), for the drops I've been using a teaspoon.
