Nappy rash or something else?

Hi,
Im a FTM my DS is currently 7 months old. We have been very lucky in that he’s never developed nappy rash, however the past week he has got a rash in the crack of his bum which seems to be getting worse. It is a bright red colour with little red spots on it. I’m trying to work out what could be causing it. He started having small amounts of solids at 6 months and I have gradually given him more and different foods but nothing new in the last week. I have changed his nappies from normal ones to pants but still the same brand (pampers). We are currently on holiday and he has been in the pool but I take him swimming weekly at home and this has never happened. It is hot here but we have only gone outside in the evening when it is cool and I use a fan, he hasn’t been exposed to excess heat to make him sweat.

can anyone offer some advice as to if any of the above could be the cause or any tips to help. He doesn’t seem to be in pain at the moment with it but I’m worried he will be.

Many thanks!

They can get nappy rash for all sorts of reasons, its very common. My guess would be most likely food related combined with the hot weather making it worse.
Are you using any cream? Sudocrem would be good as that would also be a barrier to the pool water.

Oh, and if you have been applying a cream to it and its not helping then it could be fungal nappy rash

Is it fungal perhaps ? Maybe speak to pharmacist

Thanks for the replies, I apply sudo daily and have done alternating it with the waleda nappy cream since he has been born. How do you know if it’s fungal? We aren’t home until Thursday I’ve seen online that canastan cream is used to treat fungal can I just buy some (I’m in Spain) and apply it or will it do harm if it’s not fungal?

Sudocrem / weleda are more preventative rather than curing.
Find a very thin layer of Metanium (yellow tube) nips any nappy rash in the bud pretty quickly

I don't think it can harm it if its not fungal. You can check in the pharmacy though. They should have canestan or an equivalent (active ingredient is clotrimazole)

Thank you I’m in Spain and I think you can buy that here so will head to a pharmacy

Nappy free time is very important, especially in hot/humid weather, to let the skin dry and heal.

In general bepanthen is very good, I wouldn't use sudocrem.

Thanks, why would you not use Sudo? I have left him with his nappy for the as much time as possible yesterday and today

Sorry I meant it wouldn't be my first choice, I'd use it in a pinch it's better than nothing. I've found that it's not very effective on the bum and drags along the skin when you're wiping/changing nappies. Bepanthen doesn't behave that way.

If you think it's a fungal nappy rash (red, wet looking skin regardless of how much you try to dry it) then canesten cream works very well, the kind you might have left over from thrush treatment.

Thanks I got some Bepanthen couldn’t find the yellow one and some daktarin which my partner had with him anyway and it is clearing up now, the whiteheads have gone and it looks less angry.
