Is it play and football , that sort of thing?
Is some sort of snack provided at yours?
Is it for homework as well?

I think a lot depends on the after school club. My son doesn't do his home work. As far as I can tell he does quite a lot of art and craft. They also go into the playground and play stick in the mud, catch and the school has some bikes they are allowed to play on.

The children do have a snack, yesterday my son had a hotdog and salad. They also have fruit everyday. Sometimes my son has a ham sandwich, or cheese. Prehaps a bit less healthy the children get given crisps occassionally.

Our after school club is £5 for care between 2 and 5pm. I think that after school clubs vary quite a lot in what they offer and price.

DD's don't do homework either, but hers isn't actually attached to her school, is an independant before and after school club that pick up and drop off at all local schools. They have loads of toys, pc's, big playground with equipment, dressing up and loads of art and craft etc. They do get food, usually hotdog, jacket potato kind of thing.
I pay £70pw, for before school with breakfast and after school, it covers me for full days in school hols aswell

Friends of my DC's go to an afterschool club from 3-6 and they get only water, no snacks.
If they want snacks they have to take it themselves.
They dont have many organised activities (maybe once a month they do a craft.
The age range is 4-11.
They used to have biscuits, squash, crafts and playstation etc but the centre said it wasnt making any money

Some of the kids who go hate it and are really badly behaved as a result. Its such a shame.

Sorry I wasnt trying to put you off just wanted to say ask lots of questions. Ask what activities they do, ask about snacks, visit whilst other kids are there.

boredveryverybored - god, that sounds fab!

MrsW - yes that is what I'm worried about. We don't have any other options with childcare really , no local childminders, no friends who can have him, no nearby family, and if I don't work 16 hours a week we can't afford mortgage
I don't really want him to have such a long day at 4 really and we don't know if we can get him in anyway as there is a waiting list. it's all a bit crap

Ours have an area where children can do their homework if they choose to do so.

There is a theme each night as well as free play, a dvd and beanbags for those who want to chill out and a console but its time restricted.

Its art on mondays, phiz kids on tuesdays, baking on wednesday, games galore thursday and fridays is movies and hotdogs/burgers.

They have a sandwich, fruit and either water or milk provided.

Its £5.50 until 5pm and £7.50 until 6pm.

The numbers are small (only 72 children in school so about 8-16 in club depending on the day) and the kids love it.

I like the fact he stays on the premises so no walking or mini-busing to another place of care, he's with his school friends and je knows the staff as they do other jobs at school. DS goes Tuesday to Thursday and is one of the youngest as in reception.

oh thanks HappyMummy - that is more reassuring, yours sounds great! I know ds will be used to a long day as he does nursery 2 days a week at the moment 8am - 6pm but everyone keeps telling me they get so much tireder in the school environment

I'm sure he will be fine. It is mostly the older ones who complain about going tbh.
Ask them to be honest and tell them what they do there. I may be possible for you to send in a snack and a game he likes etc. (just no favourites, in case bits go missing)

My children can choose to do school work (but tend to choose NOT to ), just chill out and free play or organised activities. My Ds1 plays football once a week and attends pc-lab, but prefers just to chill out. My DD does dance, ballet, football, arts&craft and circus-skills. Every Friday they all make pizza and cakes to bring home. It's a privately ran club at a state school btw.
