Is it just me or do disposable nappies smell funny?

Bit of a frivolous thread I know but I am convinced that disposable nappies smell worse than reuseable ones. What do you think?

I really noticed it yesterday when DS came back from day care in a disposable (they had forgotten to put his reuseable on before I picked him up). He'd pooped and peed in it by the time we got home and it fair hummed in a wierd chemical way. Why is that? Or maybe I am just a bit strange?

Never stick your nose in a nappy.

Never noticed the difference myself but it's an interesting point. I find a good slathering of Sudocrem disguises the smell of a code brown whatever the nappy.

Pampers smell horrid.

aGalChangedHerName · 19/04/2008 09:22

I always thought the opposite actually. I minded a child who wore reusables and they stank to buggery

And wipes too. They smell all chemically and wierd. Perhaps I am becoming an earth mother?

My dd3 reeks of wee in the morning if she wears a disposable overnight but if she wears cloth i cant smell her!

glucose · 19/04/2008 09:27

The Boots ones stink of that funny chemical smell

nannyL · 19/04/2008 09:39

yes the smell wierd and gross and chemically

hence ill be using cloth on my own children

BroccoliSpears · 19/04/2008 09:50

We use Moltex which are disposable but unbleached and not chemically.

On the very odd occasion dd has had to borrow a normal disposable I have found the smell so horrid it's almost made me nausious. Such a harsh chemical smell that seems to amplify the wee. Couldn't wait to get her out of it.

In moltex I barely notice if she's done a wee. In a regular disposable I can smell it accross the room.

Funnily enough I don't find it quite so offensive on my friends' children.

I even quite like the smell of Moltex sometimes . It smells a bit of hay and popcorn.

ExtraFancy · 19/04/2008 09:52

Nature Babies smell OK but other plasticky brands STINK. My reusables don't smell, but they do leak to buggery...that's another story for another thread though!

spottyshoes · 19/04/2008 09:56

They smell disgusting! If DH ever puts DS in a disposable it smells chemically and weirdly malty like a hops factory?!!??? Pampers are the worst. No smell from reusable unless he's had a chicken curry

broguemum · 19/04/2008 10:01

Interesting indeed.

It's funny isn't it how we become so used to chemical smells? DD was a disposables baby and I never noticed it - it is only now that DS has gone cloth-bot and wears the odd disposable now and then that I notice it.

Slight aside, I will have to see if I can get hold of some moltex nappies for our holiday as I don't think we have good laundry facilities in the cottage we are renting.

Pampers yes - v smelly!

Never noticed with own brands - think it's the gel stuff in Pampers (which incidentally is EVIL if it leaks... ie if you are bad mummy and leave it on too long after night-time )

BroccoliSpears · 19/04/2008 11:27

Broguemum - we generally get them either from Naturebotts or Spirit of Nature.

broguemum · 19/04/2008 13:35

BroccoliSpears - thanks a million for the links.

Broccolispears, I quite agree with you about disposables not being so offensive on friends' children, but I cant understand why?

On holidays etc we put ds in disposables and they really do reek, so glad we don't usually use them.

lackaDAISYcal · 19/04/2008 13:46

My DDs reuseables smell........

....of fairy liquid mostly

GreenMonkies · 19/04/2008 18:17

No, it's not just you, they do honk.

You are becoming an Earthmother, you'll be using Ecover for everything next and pretty soon you'll find the smell of "conventional" fabric softeners and air fresheners almost nausiating. Thats what happened to me anyway! The advert for the fabric softener that releases fragrances every time you move has me wretching just from the thought!!

OK - I'll cancel that appointment to get my legs done and will buy a mooncup. Any other steps I need to take to reach full Earth mother status?

spottyshoes · 19/04/2008 21:27

Waitrose has £2 off Ecover at the mo

katwith3kittens · 19/04/2008 21:29

Dont foroet the washable wipes Broguemum !

chipmonkey · 19/04/2008 22:02

Yes, I think on ds1 and ds2 who were in disposables, I must have become immune to the smell but I do notice if ds3 is ever put in a disposable.

GreenMonkies · 20/04/2008 09:01

"OK - I'll cancel that appointment to get my legs done and will buy a mooncup. Any other steps I need to take to reach full Earth mother status?"

Yes, all deoderant use must cease, (along with hair removal, but you've covered that already!) then all your stylish clothes must be given to charity shops and you must dress exclusively in shapeless baggy jumpers and long flowing skirts, (draw string, high waisted saggy-arsed trousers are allowed now and then) don't forget your comfortable, sensible shoes and chunky socks/tights, and your hair must be held back with a head scarf or alice band. No make up obviously!!

Welcome, Sister!!!!!!

GreenMonkies · 20/04/2008 09:03

(actually I do have a mooncup, and I'm curious about the Jamsponge too)

I use cloth full time and SIL visited the other weekend, she uses disposables on her little one. I couldn't stand the smell, it made me feel sickly.

I have a mooncup, reusable pads, use soapnuts but I refuse to give up on the hair removal

spottyshoes · 20/04/2008 09:38

Oooohhh intrigued by jam sponge lol but wouldn't you have to 'squeeze it out' errggh. I'll stick to my mooncup, that's lentilly enough for me
