Is it actually possible a 14 month old is ready to drop her nap?

I am baffled but I can’t think of any other explanation to be honest.

She has been awake since midday and was screaming all evening, thought she was tired but apparently not.

I am really struggling with naps with her, it used to be if she woke up after 1pm it was a struggle but seems to have shifted again.

It is really impacting life to be honest.

2.5-3.5 years old is the average window to drop the nap so highly unlikely that she’s ready not to nap at all. At that age I reckon she’s overtired and screaming all evening also fits because generally a well rested child is (mostly) content. 14 months is bang on the typical age to go from 2 naps to 1, and I’m assuming by ‘awake since midday’ that she napped this morning? I reckon you need to go to 1 nap, so keep her awake through the morning then put her down after lunch.

Both of mine had dropped naps by 18 months tbh.

Yes of course. Mine stopped napping at 14 months actually

She is on one nap, the problem is that even that after only having one and then being awake for hours she just won’t settle for bed.

I get she probably is overtired but not sure how to get her to sleep if she refuses to be honest.

One of mine stopped at 15 months.

AuContraire · 06/09/2024 18:41

Mine both stopped at 16 months (probably should have earlier as trying to get them to nap wasn't working and just made everyone upset).

Morwenscapacioussleeves · 06/09/2024 18:41

All of mine stopped before 17 months so I would imagine perfectly possible (& none of them slept for the "expected" amount of time at night either - still don't.)

Devilsmommy · 06/09/2024 18:43

Mine stopped at 16 months

KnickerlessFlannel · 06/09/2024 18:44

Mine dd was down to one nap a day by 4 months old so there are definitely babies who just hate naps!! Do what is right for you, you can always rei trouduce a nap if she needs it

SkeletonBatsflyatnight · 06/09/2024 18:44

Both mine had stopped by 14 months except in very specific circumstances (long car journeys for dc1 and in her sling if I was walking at reasonable pace for dc2). They always fought sleep, still do at 9 and 6.

sunshineintheafternoon · 06/09/2024 18:45

Thanks. It’s hard as she does need it but then just won’t go to sleep at night for hours and hours. It’s really stressful.

Yes. My now nearly three year old has hardly ever napped. Has had a bedtime of around 6pm to compensate but he’s up at 6 no matter what

he’d often do a car nap of thirty minutes or so on longer journeys but otherwise nothing. Has never napped in a cot or bed. Totally different to second child!!

MigGril · 06/09/2024 18:48

By that age DD was having a nap every other day or every 3rd day by 16 months we dropped the nap altogether. Who said toddlers like to nap.

Luckily my second one liked to nap a lot.

OneFastDuck · 06/09/2024 18:49

Probably not. Sounds like the nap is too early actually if it's ending at 1. She sounds overtired.

They do so much developing in their sleep, it's really important.

I've a few friends who insisted theirs was ready to nap early I think they were just lazy and cba to teach good sleep habits. They all looked shattered with dark circles and tantrumed all day- but no they weren't tired.

sunshineintheafternoon · 06/09/2024 18:53

She does get tired but how do you make them sleep … you can’t Sad

My mum likes to tell me how I dropped my nap at 12 months, so I guess it's possible

Whentwobecomesthree · 06/09/2024 20:04

There is an excellent group on Facebook called Evidence based sleep training. You can post your situation and they will advise you exactly what to do. They state 12-15 months to drop from 2-1 nap

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 10/09/2024 12:10

My second dd gave up regular naps at 4 months! She was happy, not overtired and didn't seem to do her any harm.
Would have been nice to have more of a break though.
