Smart watch with GPS tracker! Please

Someone please advise me, I've spent all day looking and still not sure! Please put me out if my misery by helping me.
Child is 11 and just started secondary school, she has a phone but I carn't put a tracker on it (long boring story)
So I'm desperately looking for a smart watch that has a tracker on. But something that is age appropriate and just looks like a smart watch and something that doesn't cost the watch. As simple as possible would be best.
Thank you

The smart watch needs to link to a phone if you want to permanently track it. If the phone is turned off you won't get the link.

TickingKey46 · 06/09/2024 16:57

It can link to my phone as unfortunately I carn't put one on her phone! Which is a right pain. Thank you for the advice

could you get something like an airtag instead?

jynjun · 06/09/2024 17:02

maybe something like this would work instead?

I was going to, but she says she wants/needs a watch so was just going to combind it. Also didn't want to embarrass her by getting an air tag as she's just started secondary school.

my kids have Xplora watches. Can track them, control their contacts etc

TickingKey46 · 06/09/2024 17:07

I don't think it has a tracker though. It tracks your fitness which is obviously different.

I've just looked but they are quite expensive. I wanted something under £50 really.
But thank you

Anyone know of any cheaper GPS phones please?

Why do you need to track your child?

gaininginsight · 07/09/2024 06:15

This is the one I got for my DS. It has a tracker to my phone and does calls and messages only, no internet. A bit fiddly to set up but does the job.

Most of the GPS fitness watches won't work for your use case. I have one (Garmin vivoactive), however activating GPS eats the battery more rapidly, so it wouldn't last the day, and also, you need to connect it to the fitness app and download the activity, so you wouldn't be able to track remotely in real time.

I don't think this is the solution for you. As others have said, an air tag would be better, but why the need to track?

Thank you, do you know the maecwne model of the watch please? And would it be suitable for a child just starting secondary school.
To answer the question of why I need to track her. She's only just started going out and about by herself (she's 11). I would have just put a tracker on her phone (like most of her friends have ) but I'm unable to due to an issue with her phone.
She needs one for her own safety as we have to an unfortunate family situation. We have a family member who poses a potential risk and as he's a homeless rough sleeper who comes and goes I need to know where she is when out and about.

A smart watch links to a phone worn by the same person. It can't link to your phone back home. You need to have a tracker app on her phone.

GinForBreakfast · 07/09/2024 08:19

Just be aware that a tracker won't "keep her safe", it just tells you her location.

You have to teach her how to keep herself safe in a variety of situations. And she will have to learn for herself (often through making mistakes) as we all did before trackers existed.

AutumnVibes · 07/09/2024 08:58

That does sound like a stressful situation. I generally agree with @GinForBreakfast but it sounds like you may have some particular situation, so you know what’s best. Would an air tag in her school bag or blazer not work and be less complicated? Then just get a normal and much cheaper watch?

TickingKey46 · 07/09/2024 09:06

Yes you can get certain watches that have GPS and the parent can see their location. It doesn't have to connect to they child's phone. These however aren't regular smart watches and are something a bit different.
Gin for breakfast
I'm aware of that but it's some reassurance I can get to her quickly if she encounters this person as I will know her location.

air tags are quite small and could be hidden in her bag or coat. just get her one and a separate watch that's not a smart watch?

Those watches have their own mobile phone built in. They need a monthly account, and are very expensive to buy. They need charging every night. Not what the OP is looking for.

TickingKey46 · 08/09/2024 08:29

Thank you all for your help. I took her phone into a computer shop yesterday and they have got it working. feeling relieved as she can now have some freedom without me worrying as much.
