What is your 18 month old’s speech like?

I’m not worried about DS, but we met up with a few of his little (same age) friends the other day and some of them seem far ahead of him, saying 2 word phrases and picking a new word up the moment it was said to them.

DS says about 20 words, including objects (car, tractor, ball, socks) and his sister’s name. He also says mama and dada but often confuses these and calls us the wrong one. He has a couple of animal noises but not many. No 2 word phrases or ‘doing’ words.

He understands loads (will bring me a pretend cup of tea or point to his nose if asked, that kind of thing) but doesn’t seem to have ‘exploded’ with language in the way some of his friends have. He steadily picks up about 2 words a week.

Just curious to see what your little ones are doing really. Thanks

Mine has just turned 20 months. I’d say he has around 30 words. Will say sentences such as ‘where is it?’ and ‘want more.’

He has not said mummy yet (sob) but does say daddy and his brothers name. He also says grandma.

He can identify and make cow, chicken, horse, mouse and pig sounds. Counts to 4 when prompted but has no concept of what he’s saying 😂

I wouldn't worry - DD didn't say her first word until 18 months, and I was also guilty of comparing her to her peers who appeared a lot more vocal.

Her speech is now miles ahead, since about 2.5 it's like having a normal conversation with an adult (honestly people comment on it 😂)

Just read to him, talk to him like a normal adult (not baby talk) and most importantly don't compare to others!!

Mine's 19 months and almost identical to yours... and I'd say he is ahead of most of his friends the same age!

My DS (21 months) only says about 30 words, no sentences or stringing two words together yet. Other babies his age from our NCT group, particularly the girls, are speaking in full sentences and were already saying 30 words at 12 months old! I'm not too concerned though, my DS seems to be a bit behind with all the milestones so far (crawling, walking, talking) but he gets there just fine in the end and makes up for it by being the happiest, most easy-going baby in the group. They're all different, and whenever I catch myself comparing him to other babies I think of the Bluey baby race episode...

Mine was similar at 18 months but has picked up a lot of words and started saying 3 word sentences just before she turned 2. From what I’ve read it’s common to have an explosion in speech around age 2-2.5. I didn’t have any words at all until I was 2.5 and my parents were definitely worried at the time.

My 19 month is very similar OP
Has about 25 words, animal noises - does around 8
The only words she puts together are 'all gone', 'one, two' or 'two, three', 'there you are/go', 'what's that'

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 05/09/2024 21:06

No words yet. She’s trying with saying ready steady go. Says “deddy deddy goo” that’s it. She’s 18 months in 2 weeks.

DD (19months) has mostly approximations of words e.g. 'Hep-i-ter' (lol) is helicopter, 'pa' for park and she's recently added the 'L' sound so ball is now ball and not 'ba'.

My DS has just turned 18 months and apart from animal noises the only words he says are Da-da-da which means Daddy and "day-dock" which means clock. He has really good comprehension and seems to understand every word we say to him, he just isn't in a rush to say anything himself!

My little boy was about the same as yours at 18 months and I was a tad worried as he seemed slightly behind his little friends and behind where my daughter was at at the same age, however at 2 his language just boomed! It was like he went from singular words to three word sentences overnight! They don't look for two word sentences until the 27 month review (if you're in the UK) so you're right not to worry-he sounds like he's doing great x

Gertrudetheadelie · 05/09/2024 23:36

My son didn't really say much until after his 27m review (cheers for that) and my daughter appears to be going the same way. However, his language skills are now excellent and he's always complimented on his vocabulary so I think some kids just wait and some are talkers from the get go!
