baby fell off bed

Dear Mumsnetters

My baby is 11 months old. I usually breastfeed him early mornings. Today I must have swapped him onto my right boob which is on the side of the bed as it was full and engorged and fell asleep while feeding him. Suddenly, my husband and I hear a bang! he fell and landed on the wooden floor on his head and back! we picked him up immediately, and checked head no bump or redness and he didn't even cry. He was just shocked. But I'm still worried. He didn't want to eat his porridge at all today so I made him French toast instead and he ate that and blueberries.

I feel horrible though and guilty about it all. Will my son be okay, I know I sound dumb right now but even though he didn't get bump etc wouldn't it hurt his poor little head.

We can't possibly tell you. You need to phone 111.

Snowdrops17 · 04/09/2024 14:41

Baby needs medical attention and to be assessed if they hit there head / neck from a fall like that .

Cinai2 · 04/09/2024 14:42

111 or A&E, I think you need to get this checked out. He’ll be fine and it’s not your fault, but better safe than sorry!

Absolutely A&E, he needs to be checked over

Beamur · 04/09/2024 14:47

You need a safety rail for your bed too. Get your baby checked over. It sounds like he's ok but babies can be hurt by falls from this height so it's probably better to ask a doctor.

Take him to a&e straight away….get him checked out

Mumtobe202310 · 04/09/2024 15:13

Thanks for your replies everyone, we are getting ready to go a & e. appreciate all the replies xx

Get him checked out to be on the safe side but try not to feel guilty. These things happen extremely quickly.

Mine rolled off a bed, fell down 3 stairs and hit her head even though I was holding her hand and she once tripped and headbutted a bed in Ikea resulting in a trip to A&E and some glue.

Get him checked, you'll know for certain and feel much better. Then put it behind you Flowers.

Similar thing happened a few weekends with us. 10 month old fell outside from our arms! Cried immediately. We were all soo shocked and distressed. We took him to a&e but they triaged us to out of ours and he was seen by a GP who said all ok. Red flags are loss of consciousness, vomiting or going floppy. Given so small good idea for him to be checked out but baby is probably OK ( you just don't want to miss anything) Dr's happy we brought in baby for check .
Hope they are ok. And you too. Its a horrible shock isn't it. Oh and don't panic that a SW will call you in a few days just to check baby is OK x

Maybe a health visitor….definitely not a social worker

CowTown · 04/09/2024 16:16

This happened to me…not sure you’ve been seen at A&E yet, but here’s what you can expect (my DC fell out of the bed onto a carpeted floor):

  • Called 111. Is baby crying? Yes (good sign). Is baby bleeding out of ears or eyes? No (good sign). Advice: take baby to A&E anyway.
  • A&E dr wanted to see baby in nappy (gave a good check over of body; presumably to look for additional marks/signs of abuse). All okay, sent home.
  • Had a follow-up telephone call from a Health Visitor later in the week. I was asked to recount the event (presumably to see if my story was consistent still—possibly for safeguarding purposes).
  • Baby is totally fine now—currently doing GCSEs at grammar school, so it appears that there were no long-term effects.
Good luck! x

They said they were from child MASH .... anyway OP just don't panic if you have a follow up call.

In our area you would only get get a call from the mash if you hadn’t acted inappropriately….eg delayed presentation to a&e …..a bump to the head from a fall from a bed doesn’t warrant a referral to childrens services…..the hosptial must have referred you …..I hope they got your consent ,….because they shouldnt have referred without your consent

Sailawaygirl · 04/09/2024 17:18

@Kitkat1523 no hospital didnt say that they were going to refer, but i work closley with adult MASH so I was expecting a call. Hospital drs didnt check baby with just nappy on, so Drs didnt have any concerns, i think it just got alerted on the system and not a 'proper paper referral' cause for adults anyway it takes ages!!!

Hi All,

Hope you and your LOs are all doing well.

I just wanted to extend my thanks to all of you, and for being so kind and reassuring.

For a first time mum kindness goes a very long way.

We went a & e and they checked him and said he seems fine and to keep an eye on any changes.

Thank you so much again x
