Can I use a travel cot every night?

Hi all my baby is 7 months and has outgrown her next to me crib. She has a cot bed in her nursery but I don't want her to move out of my room just yet.

Would a travel cot be okay to use every night?

Have a look at the travel cot mattress and see whether you think that is suitable to sleep on long term They're thin as anything.

They are very uncomfortable . Not sure if you can get a suitable mattress to make it more comfy but you can feel the poles underneath . I use to always add a fat duvet underneath when I had to use them

I was planning on adding a proper mattress?

Then yes

Helpful to include that in op perhaps. If a proper mattress fits then that would be better.

With a proper mattress yes it's ok. Be careful you don't hurt your back lifting her in and out of it though!

Hello,

I had my twins in a travel cot together once they outgrew their mose basket.
They never went into their 'cots'.
I'd get a travel cot mattress, which is a little more padded. While I waited for it to come, I had a thick cover under a fitted sheet, which added padding.

Everyone has their own ways. It's just finding one that works for you.

Check with manufacturer but a normal mattress might not have the right fit. Would be better to sleep in proper cot and you can sleep on their floor if you need. Check out the lullaby trust

I think a travel cot is fine for a week or 2 on holiday or just naps but not ideal for long term. We just put the cot bed in our room, there was enough room once we'd moved out other furniture.

I'd recommend the Hauck travel cot, they sell their own extra mattress that you can buy and it's pretty thick and comfy. My kids have both slept on it occasionally for trips away until they were turning 3 and always slept well on it.

We did, we just brought a proper matress

You need to check your specific travel cot as some of them say that you must not add a mattress for safe sleep purposes. Some of the brands sell mattresses specifically for their cots so if you haven't bought one yet, that might be worth checking. Babies don't feel uncomfortable on hard mattresses / surfaces like we do, but it needs to be breathable, so no adding extra blankets underneath or anything like that. Lullaby Trust sometimes puts things on their social media about travel cots.

My son absolutely would not sleep in his proper cot. We tried everything.

I bought a really good mattress for a Joie travel cot and he slept in there from 8 to 18 months when we took the side off his cot and used it as a bed, with me laying down with him while he fell asleep. I would sit in the travel cot with him then climb out once he was asleep, something I obviously couldn't do in his proper cot as I'm very short 🤣

drowninginsick · 04/09/2024 11:48

We did it with a proper mattress bought new. Same reason as you outgrew next to me but was still young and didn't want to do own bedroom yet

Caspianberg · 04/09/2024 11:51

The babybjorn has a really good mattress and it sits on the floor not bars like others . If you buy any with similar fold and style the mattress on floor should be comfy.
I also like I could step into the cot and put sleeping baby down if needed as no weight limit.

TenderChicken · 04/09/2024 11:58

Yes I used a travel cot as a normal cot, just bought a nice mattress for it.

Sleep10 · 24/06/2025 21:30

I did with my twins so they could share for a good while. Though I padded the cot mattress with blankets tucked under and a fitted sheet over the top before I knew you could buy mattress for them.
My girls slept fine in one.
