Help! 3 year old DS not interested in toilet training

Any suggestions for me please?

DS aged just over 3 - not interested at all in training. All the kids in his nursery class are trained - doesn't bother him being the only one in nappies. I ask him and ask him if he wants to go, make him sit on the loo, keep him there reading etc - nothing, then two minutes later 'oh no, it's all going down my leg!'.

He will not go first thing in the morning, although his wee in the morning is so huge (as he can hold it all night so nappy is dry) that he floods the nappy and gets upset at leaking.

What can I do? Have tried bribery with chocolate buttons / stickers / big present at the end of the day / fancy pants with Nemo / Buzz Lightyear on them - nothing works!

Do I just keep trying every couple of weeks till he cops on? DH was a late learner, so MIL says!

Please help - any suggestions very gratefully received!

My friend's DS was the same, he only trained when other children at nursery started calling him a "baby" for wearing nappies.
Then he trained in 2 weeks, no problems.

Is he frightened of the actual toilet? My friend's child was, thought he would fall down it.
Would his father be able to encourage him?

My DD was very resistant to a potty till we twigged that the potty was too shallow and she hated the wee splashing back up her leg. We then went out with her and let her choose a potty, one of those chair type ones. No problems after that. She moved on to the toilet quite quickly too.

Thanks Miggsie - we have a little seat on the big loo, so DS doesn't feel like he's going to fall down it. Also have a small potty which isn't very comfy - I must try one of those chairs with the potty insert, see if that's any better. Will head off to Mothercare tomorrow!

He'll start to not like the wee running down his legs and go to the toilet but it's not nice for you to have to keep clearing it up. My daughter hated the fact her pants didn't keep in the wee as did the pull ups and soon learnt to go.

Even though he's in nappies at nursery ask them to take him to the toilet with the others, our nursery did this with mine and they soon wanted to be the same and learnt to say that they needed to go. You may find at first he's just going to be with the others but it will come!

ds wasn't bothered at 3. When he was 3.5 he was sat by the side of the pool on holiday in just a towel when he suddenly said that he needed the toilet and we've not looked back. Your ds has probably got far more important things on his mind than using the potty, one day it will click for him. HTH
