6 month old constipation

I started my 6 month old on solids last Friday and it seemed to be going well. Well today she's had constipation for the first time which was horrible, she was really distressed and I just felt so bad for her. She eventually passed all of the bowel movement. There was a very tiny amount of blood but thats it. I've put her to bed now so hopefully she will sleep through. What should I do to help her? I have prunes so can make some prune puree for her tomorrow, will that do the trick? Should I speak to the health visitor/take her to the doctor? I don't really know how to handle it. I suffer with chronic constipation myself so I know it's not usually serious, but I don't know if it's more serious in babies? Another thing is I gave her yoghurt today, I know dairy can constipate some people, could it have been that or is that unlikely? If any of you have any experiences of this and any tips to put my mind at rest that would be great.

Prunes are a really good idea my eldest suffered with constipation and a pouch of prune puree really really helped.

In terms of dairy. Have they ever been exposed previously? By that I mean we're they formula feed or exclusively breast feed. If they were given formula even as part of mixed feeding then they have been exposed previously. Constipation can be a sign of a milk allergy so if this was the first introduction of dairy it is potentially an allergy. If that's the case keep a food and symptom diary which will be usefull when you need to talk to a doctor.

A chat with the health visitor could put your worries to rest

My DGS has had exactly the same problem OP. It seems to be very common. We upped his fibre with oats, prunes, pureed fruit and offered him lots of water. Avoid bananas. Don't feed her too much fibre straight away but I'd go with 100% fruit puree, massage her tummy gently and move her legs around like a bicycle which should hopefully get her moving. It lasted a couple of weeks on and off but he is fine now - he's now 8 months.

No she is formula fed and she had a little bit of butter in some of her other purees so definitely not an allergy. But maybe it was just too much yoghurt at once and made her constipated? I'm intolerant to dairy and get these symptoms but no known allergy. I think I will avoid yoghurt for now and give her prune puree. Should I give her prunes daily?

Curious why you said to avoid bananas as I've given this to her 3 times now? I'm glad to hear it passed for your little one. It's horrible isn't it?

Bananas are known to be constipating for lots of people. They still make my 2 year old constipated even though she loves them. Eggs are also constipating. The Solid Starts app tells you which foods are constipating and which should help.

I think constipation is quite common with weaning and my DD certainly suffered up until at least 12 months. I mostly used prune purée and pear purée to try to help and make sure they are having some water (more as they get older).

I didn't know that, thank you! Will check out the solid starts app too. I haven't started giving her water yet but I certainly will now.

Prune puree and water did the trick for us!
