Is my toddler outgrowing her cot?

Over the past week or so my 18 month old DD has been seeming really uncomfortable at bedtime. She has always been quite active in her cot after we put her to bed, no matter how tired she is, and will sit or stand chattering away to herself for a half an hour or so until she finally settles down to sleep.

At the moment she isn't standing up or sitting like usual, she will lie down and then spin herself round and round, she tries to stick her legs sideways through the bars of the cot (as she's in a sleeping bag she can't stick them through properly) and she stomps and kicks at the bars. She has been crying and seems frustrated. She's banged her head a few times doing her spinning and just doesn't seem to be able to get comfortable. It's also taking an average of about an hour/hour and a half for her to go to sleep.

I wondered if maybe she is getting too "big" (although I know she technically isn't) for the cot and would benefit from the sides being taken off? My worry is then that she will be constantly in and out of it all night! DH and I hadn't even been thinking about taking the sides off the cot until she was physically big enough to climb out of it if she wanted to, so it seems a bit early to us.

If it's started all of a sudden it's unlikely she's just suddenly too big for it (and if she is taking the bars off isn't going to make it any bigger!). It's more likely that she's uncomfortable for some other reason. Is she too hot? Constipated? Any kind of allergy that means she's itchy? New sleeping bag/PJ's? Is the sleeping bag too small?

Doubt she’s too big for it. Cot beds, as in when you take the sides off, fit an average sized child up to about age 4. What does her overall sleep including naps look like? It’s the usual age for the 2->1 nap transition, so could be that if she’s still on 2. Or is bedtime too early?

I wouldn't take the side off yet. Perhaps she needs to be more tired when she goes to bed.

Not trying to scare you but please be really careful with the poking leg through the bar thing. My ds did it at a similar age and got trapped for over half an hour. It was absolutely horrible and I nearly phoned the fire brigade. I get that your kid is in a sleeping bag but don't ever think oh I'll just pop him in his cot without his sleeping bag playing while I go to the toilet as that's how it happened for us. Sorry I know that's not the answer to your question but still worth mentioning I feel.

My DD had to take the cot down by the time DGS was 12m old, because he managed to hurl himself over the side (side fully up) several times and would NOT sleep in a sleeping bag. He went into a toddler bed and while he got out quite often at least he wasn't at risk of getting limbs trapped.
Of course that meant he soon learned to toddle across the landing and get in with Mum and Dad ...

My advice is to keep her in for as long as possible. For me the only reason to stop using a cot is if they try to climb out and it’s therefore not safe.

My DS used to rotate around a lot and would sleep in all different positions (head at either end or across the cot sideways).

Eventually he started sleeping in one direction consistently. I think it was probably when he was too long to sleep sideways!

If it’s taking so long to go to sleep perhaps she needs to go to bed a bit later?

Mine was looking uncomfortable earlier than that. He's a bit of a traveler before he settles down so at 10 months old I got a single floor bed with an extra high guard and he sleeps beautifully now. Mine never used a sleeping bag, he never liked being constrained. Wouldn't even wear a babygro😅 I think some kids just need more room 😂

Why on earth is an 18 month old still in a cot for goodness sake!

Mumistiredzzzz · 31/08/2024 21:28

Took mine out at about 16 months maybe, she was a climber however, she slept really well afterwards, we actually moved her straight to a low single bed. Skipped the cot bed bit and toddler beds and just went straight to it.

My 3 year old is still in a cot. Why wouldn't he be?

Do you think a cot is a crib?

Bizarre post - Moses basket lasts until 3-6 months, cot 6 months to around 2.5 years. Depends on the child, but not many are out of a cot by 18 months
