'Mummy are YOU the tooth fairy?'

Ok need help. Daughter 10 has just asked this to me. She had a tooth fall out other day and I left 50p under her pillow. A friend must have said oh it's just your mum. She is quite old to still believe I know but I've always just gone along with it.... I just said I'm just going to shower back in bit and need to think of what to say. Any advice?

Haha I was often accused of being the Tooth Fairy and just denied it! Even though I'm pretty sure my child knew I was lying. He didn't lose any teeth until he was nearly 8 so he never completely believed, but he still wanted the money and the ritual so...

I think she is probably old enough to tell the truth to if she is asking no ? Then I suppose where does it end will her next question be about Santy I suppose it all depends on if she will get teased over still believing in the tooth fairy ?

The answer is "yes"

I'm amazed you've got to 10!

"No, I'm too tight to be giving you money for every little tooth!"

Unless you think she'd rather know the truth. My DD is ten and I'm not sure she really believes - but I think she would be sad to be told 'there's no tooth fairy' so I just intend to brush it off.

My 8yr old son asked the other day this very question. I'm a rubbish liar and he could tell from my face there is no fairy. He is a clever boy and had it all worked out. He does however still believe in Father Christmas, fully expecting this to be the last year he believes however 😩

circular1985 · 29/08/2024 13:43

At 10 I would tell her the truth.

singularcessation · 29/08/2024 13:48

I was asked and told the truth. DD was upset and I felt absolutely awful. But I don't really want to lie to her. Anyway we've agreed that the tooth fairy does exist but that I give the money and leave the card. She's 7.

Your child is 10!! At this age surely they are old enough to appreciate that it’s a nice magical thing that parents do for their kids, rather than being disappointed that the fairy isn’t real.

Have you had the Father Christmas question yet…? As that’s the obvious sequel if not.

She’s 10!! Surely you just say yes or make it into a joke and you do the silly knowing wink thing where you tell her she has to believe or else they’ll be no cash next time. I wouldn’t double down on the pretence, you’d be setting her up to get teased by her friends. My DD is 7 and I don’t think (m)any of kids her age really properly believe in the tooth fairy or easter bunny, it’s just a fun play pretend story and they really like the rewards that come from playing along!

I remember DS coming home from a friend's house and telling me "Did you know that Bob's mum is the tooth fairy? She must be very busy."

Rocknrollstar · 29/08/2024 20:58

I was out for the evening. DS told DH that he had lost a tooth and was going to put it under his pillow. He suspected I was the tooth fairy and as I was out and wouldn’t know about the tooth he wanted to see if the tooth fairy came. Of course I did!
