Windy baby

Hello,
I wanted to write on here as a very tired mum of a newborn (he will be 4 weeks old on Tuesday).
My son is a very windy baby - he tends to go down at around half 9/10, and sleeps for around 3.5 hours. The moment he wakes up following this, he is basically up all night grunting and writhing in his next to me cot, trying to pass wind, but he has so much wind that it feels constant.
I am currently EBF - when he is on the breast he is sometimes very fussy, but again that’s usually in the evening (he pulls off, comes back on etc). He is putting on weight well but a lot of the time if he is awake he is mainly trying to push out wind.
I feel so bad for him, I’ve tried everything, infacol, bicycle legs etc - nothing seems to work well.
I for one too am exhausted, and I also have a 2 year old toddler so trying my best to stay afloat.
I was just wondering if there was anything else I could be doing to help him? I am considering taking him to the doctors too to rule out any allergies, but not sure if this is just something we need to ride out? Would appreciate any advice from anyone that has been through something similar with a newborn. Thanks in advance.

That is a fairly typical sleep pattern at that age. They do like to feed a lot in the early hours and that feeding will help to establish your supply.

If he's very windy though, does he have any of these symptoms?

If he’s exclusively breastfed and he’s windy, it’s very possibly your diet.

Do you drink much caffeine? Eat a lot of pulses?

I had to go caffeine free for tea and coffee and drink fennel or camomile tea - and cut back on my daal habit - when DD1 was about 6 weeks old as she was very upset by gas.

It sorted her out in a couple of days.

It was a very old school, experienced midwife who suggested it. Her advice had been great on pretty much everything, so I gave it a go.

I must admit that swapping to caffeine free did help DS but it could have just been coincidental.
