"Nursery uniform"

My toddler starts nursery in September...3 days a week. We've been told to not send them in their best clothing as these could get ruined. I did a vinted haul and bought her a "nursery uniform". Does this sound about right or am I missing anything. I have 8 pairs of leggings, 14 long sleeved tops, 4 zip up hoodies and 1 tunic style dress. Also have wellies and 2 pairs of canvase style shoes. Their all in the same colour tones so can all be mixed and matched.

Sounds like plenty, though you may want some short sleeve tops and shorts for summer? It can still be very warm in September.

Sounds great. Add some t shirts for warmer days.

For three days a week it's more than enough. I went to Sainsbury's and bought a
Five pack of leggings and long served tops,
Short and t shirts in the summer. Dts were in 4 days a week.

Why do you have 14 tops for 3 days a week? Even with a change of clothes for each day that's enough for 2.5 weeks without doing any laundry!
Also September is usually warm so some shorts/shirt sleeve t shirts might be welcome. You don't have to buy things have a look through her wardrobe for anything a bit faded/bobbly/ has a mark on it. We used to relegate things to the nursery drawer.

The idea of having nursery clothes is sensible in that they will likely get all sorts on them and some stains etc.

You know that toddlers don’t have to match their tones, right?

I know that. I just wanted to be able to throw things together.

I agree. I know plenty of people who have nursery clothes, but they just use clothes they already have that are slighty worn. Surely she already has clothes that you don't mind getting messy?

In my opinion you have far too many things, and I agree with other posters who said t-shirts are a better idea than long sleeved tops. Nurseries and schools are usually warm places, so layers they can add or remove depending on the temperature are a better option.

14 long sleeve tops??!
That is nearly five weeks' worth.

You need three tops, three bottoms and at a push three jumpers/cardigans.

Nohopeforme91 · 19/08/2024 16:25

Thanks for the replies everyone. I know it seems excessive but I did get it all for under £40. It's not all bought as some stuff that is a bit worn, will get used for nursery. Will look to get her maybe 3 /4 tshirts for the warmer summer days

Wow sounds like loads. DC3 literally does have a nursery uniform - she’s the only one who wears it so far (newly opened nursery 😄) - 2 polo shirts which match the staff so she likes that, and 1 sweatshirt. Sometimes I send her in clothes from her nursery drawer - leggings, old t shirts etc. We have never bought anything specifically for nursery, just relegated hand me downs and stained things to the nursery drawer.

You don't need to buy anything else. Just use what you already have.

We went the other way and just had a few pieces that were nicer and saved for home. 90% of her wardrobe is handed down from relatives/ colleagues and she loves crafts so everything gets covered in paint and pens at home and nursery! Most of it comes off. She goes through spells of living off pasta and olive oil and that causes us more issues with washing than the paints/pens!

jolota · 19/08/2024 17:03

I did the same thing as you with the second hand clothes. Also 3 days a week and have 3 summer outfits & 3 winter outfits.
Check what your nursery expects in terms of spare outfits, ours want 2 spare outfits sent in with them. So worst case scenario she uses 2 each day which means needing 6 spare outfits.
So doesn't seem to excessive to me. I don't normally need to use 6 spare outfits but its so much easier to just have it than have to worry about it.

How is that possibly enough?

My son goes to nursery in one outfit with two spares. They need clothes in their bag incase they have an accident or get messy. 14 is too much but 3 tops isn't enough either.

TickingAlongNicely · 19/08/2024 18:46

When mine were little they wore the "nursery" clothes out of the time... soft play, arts and crafts, park trips etc... we needed the play clothes more than the nice clothes!

InTheRainOnATrain · 19/08/2024 18:58

DS has an actual nursery uniform but even if he didn’t I’d buy the same items just in my own choice of colours. For full time and because I don’t always want to wash mid week this is what we have:
-5 polo shirts (or short sleeved Ts if I was choosing)
-5 sweatshirts (or hoodies, or even jumper dress for a girl)
-5 jogging bottoms (or leggings)
-5 shorts
-trainers just for nursery because they’ll inevitably get paint on
-wellies
-1 extra set of everything including socks and pants to stay in bag on peg in case of accident/incident, 1 of mine never had toilet accidents but was prone to falling over in puddles and needing a head to toe change 🤣

Forget the long sleeved tops- short sleeves are better for layering and nurseries can get hot. Forget the canvas shoes as it’ll be miserable in wet feet if they go out to play after it’s rained, and also trainers are better for running and playing.
