Pull ups - any point?

Childminder seems to think there is....

DS has had his nappy off in the house over christmas and when not wearing it, he will reliably wee in the potty but not poo.
But will wee in nappy when he has it on.....

Childminder seems to think he should be in pull ups
I think they are just a gimmick (and leak!)
Any opinons...?

I mean I pull the soiled nappy apart (that's how one removes them).

Blu · 05/01/2005 11:24

DS was thoroughly confused by them - they feel like a nappy, and if there is an accident it feels comfy and dry like a nappy so it is no incentive to remember that they aren't still in nappies.
I dismissed the whole idea as a marketing gimmick after the first packet, and din't buy more!

popsycal · 05/01/2005 11:55

so - the consensus seems to be that 1. they are good for convenience in non-potty training children and easy to put on/take off and gets kidies used to pulling pants up and down
2. they are rubbish to try to fox kids into thinking they are wearing pants and therefore asking for the potty as they would in pants.....

or 'Pants as pants'!

ok - so the plan is this.
when he is at home, nappy off and real underpants on......
Childminders thurs and fri - will ask her to try him on toilet at regular intervals but stil in nappies
saturday - quiet day in the house with hard core potty training (with some small bribery for poo maybe..)
will let you know ho it goes!

Good luck, Popsy. Can't believe you posted this since we're due about the same time and I'm furiously reading up about potty training myself . D-day here will either be Sunday or Monday - tomorrow is toddler group and she sees her nanna on Saturday morning so not before Sunday but Monday will be quieter with dh at work so we'll see (of course, having the extra pair of hands for cleaning might come in handy

I even bought some little girl knickers today

Right - off to read more potty training threads in preparation

We used Pulls Ups as an alternative to nappies, not as a potty training aid. Pulls Ups suited us and DD more than normal nappies and we used them from about 14 months or so, maybe earlier. We found them easier, especially wheh DD was wearing skits and dresses - very quick to change on the go.

But I don't particularly think they are useful as potty training aids as they still work as a nappy, and soak up any accidents. Therefore your child doesn't rweally know they are wet, and have no incentive to take them off for a wee.

BTW, they never leaked for DD, and we used them for nearly a year day and night.

Hulababy · 05/01/2005 19:05

Popsy - DD had problems coming round to the idea of doing a poo on the potty I know some people don't agree with it, but what finally won DD round was a a reward of 3 or 4 chocolate buttons, as well as her sticker, each time she managed it. I restricted chocolate to this time only during the training.

AMerryScot · 05/01/2005 19:05

I use Pampers Easy Ups on DD. Yes, she treats them like a nappy...but, I personally find them easier than ordinary nappies as DD can change herself (when wet, that is)!

The are a fraction of a penny more expensive than the equivalent size in the regular Pampers range. I don't find they leak at all. I don't think we've had any leaks in the ?9 months that she's been wearing them. I would not go back to ordinary nappies now - although I'm hoping that I don't have to buy many more packets of Easy Ups either.

Whizzz · 05/01/2005 19:07

We used them but only as a "you're getting to be a big boy so you are too big for nappies", as an encouragement to move towards pants. When it came to potty training - we just put underpants on him & hoped for the best (there weren't that many accidents to be honest). I don't remember actively pulling the Pullups up & down to go the loo.

No - I think they are a gimmick for the nappy fat cats to get fatter. Sorry to be such a cynic.

Hulababy · 05/01/2005 20:44

Popsy - we found that going cold turkey in pants only worked well for us. Once we started potty training, no nappies were used at all. I was concerned that returning to nappies might have confused here.

Good luck with potty training. Hope it goes well, and as planned

Caligula · 05/01/2005 20:54

Popsycal I agree with you. Never saw the point of them. Used them with my first, but found they acted as more expensive nappies. Didn't bother with my second.

Good luck!
