Is this furniture dangerous for kids? Would you buy

I’m a first time mum, looking at buying this chair for our living room (see attached).
DD is currently 5 months old. I’m future thinking about her being a young toddler and beyond, climbing on furniture - is this a big no no hazard?

Would love to know what experienced parents would do? Obviously it’s a hazard in some senses but so are a lot of furniture and kitchen corners if kids were to climb and fall etc etc. Is this corner unreasonably so to the point where you’d replace it if you owned it?

It doesn't look very comfortable and I can see a climbing baby/toddler going head first over those thin arms.
And you weren't really thinking of that colour were you....

You'll be teaching them not to climb on furniture so it would be fine.

This was my thought. I’d just be sure to say “don’t jump on this, you could hurt yourself..”. However as a non experienced parent I’d love to know how realistic that expectation is from others more experienced…😏

Kids aren’t dogs, they are allowed to sit on the furniture Confused

That looks like the least child friendly chair you could choose.

The biggest problem with that is that it’s white!

Are the covers washable? We have a white fabric sofa that we bought just before having kids, deliberately so that we could be liberal with the bleach / stain remover when washing it! (Top tip: toothpaste followed by oxygen-based stain remover and a long wash cycle is the way to fully remove lipstick from white fabric 😅) 4 years in it's still looking very clean and white, but we do wash the covers fairly regularly, and make the kids sit on a throw if they're drinking hot chocolate on tthere. We also only have washable felt tips - our one sharpie is kept on a high shelf!

IME, your kid is going to fall off of most of the chairs in your house at some point, and that chair looks like quite a low height to fall from. Also quite a wide base relative to its height, so less likely to tip over than the death trap bar stools at PILs house a taller chair.

I'd get it if it's comfortable to sit on!

I wouldn’t buy it. It’s not that it’s dangerous really. It’s that it doesn’t look like it will survive young children and it’s WHITE! That wouldn’t last a week in our house. You need solid sturdy furniture in dark colours.

Peonies12 · 15/08/2024 09:42

I'd be far more concerned by the colour! But honestly kids will adapt to your home, we've never done any "baby proofing", just teach them to be safe.

With all the best will in the world, some kids will always find a way to hurt themselves regardless of what concessions you make to safety. We have a circular coffee table, I assumed very kid friendly, my youngest manages to smack his face on it several times a week. I could replace it with a foam cube and he'd find a way to injure himself.
Avoid white though, or see if you can get some additional covers to get you through the potty training stage.

I’m not bothered by the colour.. fully aware it’s a terrible terrible colour choice for kids but I’ll deal with it.

My concern is the metal detail of the corner - it would obviously hurt a child to fall onto it so I’m wondering if it’s too risky or just as risky as basically every other piece of furniture that has any edges around children..
